Critical response for BIOETHICS...

Description

Hi Everyone -- this week I would like you to consult the Portmore (2012) resource on Sakai (under 'Essay Resources') for examples of good and bad thesis statements. After consulting this resource, formulate a specific thesis relating to any one of the topics we've covered so far in the course. For example: "In this paper I will argue that Voluntary Active Euthanasia (VAE) is morally on a par with Voluntary Passive Euthanasia, though for slightly different reasons than James Rachels offers. In particular, I will argue that, contra Rachels, the intent of the physician in the case of VAE is subtly different than in the case of VPE. In both instances, however, the physician’s primary intent is to respect their patient’s wishes, and this makes both PAE and VAE equivalent morally speaking, and distinct from other instances of ‘killing’". Make sure to formulate your thesis as clearly and succinctly as possible, and in a way that would be understandable to anyone who is somewhat familiar with the topic. NB. Your critical response should be no longer than 1 page (~250-300 words) in length. For this assignment it is okay if your response ends up being less than 250 words. You will be graded principally on the strength of your thesis statement, and the feedback is primarily meant to help you prepare for your final essay.

In particular, I will argue that Marquis’s criticism fails to acknowledge what makes a fetus a person and dismisses a pregnant person’s personhood. In contrary to Marquis, Thompson rebuttals that a fetus is a person, but in itself, the person is not given the right to use another person’s body to sustain or bring about that life. Abortion should be permissible in accordance with the pregnant person’s bodily integrity....
