Description

Henry Miller claims that “The history of the world is the history of a privileged few”? To what extent do you believe this to be true? In this quote, Henry Miller tries to imply the narrow & tunnel-like vision history has as it is only the history of those that write it. A good example of this was the murder of Julius Ceasar. Depictions of Brutus and Ceasar’s murders are often glorified and the men are held in high esteem for the brutal betrayal of their leader. This is because Julius Ceasar is often depicted as a ruthless tyrant and thus his murder is seen as justified. When Mark Anthony and Octavian(Ceasars son) went on to defeat the republic, Brutus and the other diplomats were glorified and put on pedestals for their attempt to save democracy from dictatorship. In actuality, Ceasar was part of the rival party, the Populares, who happened to favour the Plebians, members of the lower class. Whilst there were more reasons for his murder, these senators were no heroes and were instead ensuring their place in Rome’s political future, yet history portrays them as the protectors of democracy....
