Description

The Evil Genius in Bandersnatch In Bandersnatch the movie starts off like any other; following the main character, Stefan, as he tries to develop a video game based off a book. However, unlike any other movie it is an interactive game where you can choose your own experience by making decisions for stefan. When the movie gets to certain points two options come up on the screen and the watcher can take the movie wherever they want it to go. There are actually 5 main endings with different ways to get to each ending according to one website however, not even the producers of the movie know just how many endings there are. This demonstrates that we are the evil genius, since we are the ones making decisions for him. As the story continues, he begins to realize that he's not in control and frantically asks whats happening. At which point you can give him one of two signs, the first will lead him to get scared and panicked and he will go to the therapist or the other option just makes him confused and will lead to him murdering his own father. The name Bandersnatch actually came from a fictional character in Lewis Carroll’s novel Alice Through the Looking Glass the sequel to the very popular novel Alice in Wonderland. Unlike in the movie, Alice actually knows that she’s going into another realm because she specifically goes into the mirror on her own free will. Stefan on the other hand does not, this is shown many times throughout the movie when he is seen taking pills in the beginning, his father coming out of a room and locking the door (is he hiding something in the room and why can’t Stefan go inside), and finally the ashtray is some sort of trigger for him because his father repeatedly puts cigarettes out in the ashtray and whenever Stefan sees this he becomes agitated. He is also seen flipping through a book and one of the chapters is labeled mind control conspiracies leading viewers to believe he may have been mind controlled since he was young. The evil demon is also known as the malicious demon is a concept under Cartesian philosophy. Cartesian philosophy was originated by Rene Descartes and François Poullain de la Barre, Nicolas Malebranche and Baruch Spinoza helped him really solidify the theory. Descartes imagines that there is an evil demon that has “the utmost power and cunning has employed all his energies in order to deceive me." This demon is supposedly in another realm that's exactly like our version of earth. Descartes even goes on to say "I shall think that the sky, the air, the earth, colours, shapes, sounds and all external things are merely the delusions of dreams which he has devised to ensnare my judgement. I shall consider myself as not having hands or eyes, or flesh, or blood or senses, but as falsely believing that I have all these things." Some people believe the malicious demon has utmost power however this goes against what Descartes actually says. This is connected to Bandersnatch because as the watcher making decisions for Stefan we are the “evil demon” with the utmost power. We technically are deceiving him due to the fact that we are making the decisions for him which is leading him to think that he actually wanted to do that; he doesn't know that we are there doing things for him.Up until a certain point he doesn't know that we (the people watching the movie) are controlling him and when he does finally realize he becomes psychotic. The movie goes on as we make impactful decisions for him but when he gets frustrated that his computer isn't working we have a choice to make. When the watcher makes the choice Stefan begins to do whatever action we choose but

catches himself and says, “No, I'm not doing that.” He soon realizes what's going on and actually begins speaking directly to the watcher. He says things such as, “Who are you?”, “Show me a sign if you can hear me” and “What are you doing?” Another option comes up on the screen and we can either choose between explaining what Netflix is to him or we can show him a logo design. Choosing to explain leads him to sound insane when he tells his father “someone from the 21st century is controlling me” and he goes to his therapists office which leads to another choice. However, if you choose to show him the logo labeled as “The White Bear”, he just gets confused for a second but moves on with his life. The white bear very significant because it has many meanings to it; in Bandersnatch it represents the choices the viewer can make throughout the story. The logo itself represents free will however, in stefans case he has none. This symbol has been shown many times throughout the series and in every case it is used in a way of controlling people. As he continues to lose his mind he begins to see a demon named Pax. This demon is seen as a lion and the lion actually begins to appear in many different scenes throughout the movie. He is first seen when Stefan is watching a documentary about Jerome F. Davis, Pax is also in the video game Stefan is creating, and on an LSD paper that Stefan is given by a friend. After the LSD scene, Stefan runs out of the apartment where Colin (another character in the movie) has just commit suicide and runs into a physical manifestation of Pax. Stefan later finds documents with the title P.A.C.S, a file with the white bear symbol next to his name and when he opens the file he not only finds documentation when he was drugged and controlled which has happened since birth but also a film of his trauma....
