Description

Name: Jean Piaget Date of Birth: August 9th, 1896 Death: September 16th, 1980 School of thought/specialty/subfield of psychology: Cognitive psychology and development theory. Psychologist Jean Piaget was known for his incredible influential theories in cognitive psychology. His theories tested a better understanding of children's mental development. He was born on August 9th, 1896, in Neufchatel, Switzerland and since his early ages, he was fascinated with topics such as mollusks and albino sparrow. At the age of 10, his desire for knowledge about mollusks led him to the ideal location, the local museum of natural history where he continued to learn. In his teen years, he wrote a stupendous short scientific paper about the albino sparrow, which was then published along with many other articles written at his young age. After completing high school, Piaget attended University of Neufchatel where he studied zoology; there, he received his PhD in Natural Sciences. In 1918, he was fortunate enough to study psychology under the founders of analytical psychology, Carl Jung and Paul Eugen Bleuler where he further developed his interest for psychoanalysis. He then proceeded to Paris where he studied abnormal psychology at the Subonne University. In 1920, he began working with Théodore Simon at Alfred Binet Laboratory in Paris. There he evaluated standardized tests that Simon created which were meant to measure the child’s intelligence and point out connections between the child’s age and its errors. Piaget declared that the tests were too stringent, and soon realized that factual knowledge does not equal to intelligence or understanding. He soon identified four stages of mental development from basic object identification to highly abstract thoughts.

Jean Piaget’s theory consisted of four mental development stages: Sensorimotor Stage (learning through motor actions) which takes place in ages zero to two, Preoperation Stage (develop intelligence through the use of symbolic language, fantasy play and natural intuition) which occurs around three to seven years old, Concrete Operational Stage (develop cognitively through the use of logic that is based on concrete evidence) which takes place around ages eight to eleven years old, and lastly is Formal Operations (the ability to think abstractly with more understandings of different things) which occurs in ages twelve to fifteen. He named the assemblage of his theories: “Genetic Epistemology”. Unfortunately, this leading figure passed away on September 16th, 1980, in Geneva, Switzerland; from an unknown cause. He made major impacts on an entirely new field of scientific study, which made him the recipient of many awards, and author of over fifty books and hundreds of papers. His theories and studies were quite solely what made him responsible for the new scientific field on areas of cognitive theory and development of psychology. Bibliography: Jean Piaget Biography.
