Marjane’s identity at the start of the novel:
At the start of the novel, Persepolis, the main character Marji is a small and inquisitive girl during the Iranian revolution. She is fairly religious and believe she is a prophet. Her parents are profreedom which can be seen in some of her acts.
Marjane’s identity now:
She now lives in Austria in a share-house and has developed a great deal of independence. She has also slightly distanced herself from her religion.
Difficulties, challenges and hardships which lead to this change in identity:
Moving countries, meeting new friend who do not have the best influence on her.

Throughout the novel Persepolis, the main character Marji undergoes a significant identity change. As at the start of the novel she portrays herself as a small and inquisitive Iranian girl growing up during the Iranian revolution. By the time her mother comes to visit her in Austria, Marji is no more a small and inquisitive Iranian girl. The first change to Marji and the start to her rebelliousness occurs when she leaves school during school time with some older girls (pg. 112). That this stage she disobeys her mother’s authority and is punished. The second major change to her identity is when she is living in Austria and goes with her FORMAL to the woods to smoke some marijuana (pg. 194). This goes against her religion and cultural beliefs but at the time she does it she has rebelled quite a bit....
