Hannah Shill Period 4

Video 1: Students’ beliefs and values affect how they learn. There are “beliefs that make you stupid”, such as thinking that skimming through something you need to read is effective. Always set aside more time for homework and actually read the textbooks. Another one is students thinking that they’re bad at a certain subject, therefore they can’t do it well. Something I found surprising is that hard work and time doesn’t exactly lead to success. Something I will do to take what Dr. Chew said into my schoolwork is to not distract myself while studying or doing homework. I won’t be unprepared for exams. I need to have good metacognition. Video 2: There are two categories that fall under Level of Processing - Shallow (focusing on things such as the spelling of a word) and deep (thinking of meaning relating to experience). There are four groups: intentional, incidental, e-checking, and pleasantness. I was surprised that people that fall under the “shallow” category can’t really learn that well, even if they want to. I want to use deep processing so I can learn better. Video 3: Elaboration, distinction, personal experience, and appropriate to retrieval and application are the four steps that are needed to achieve deep processing. I didn’t know that in order to successfully succeed in college, you need to overcome overlearned high school skills. I want to be able to overlearn things that are most important. Video 4: Question generation (deep questions), concept maps, practice retrieving information (not using notes, using info) are strategies to achieve deep processing. Taking notes in class is very important. Taking notes on a laptop is distracting so writing it down by hand is preferable. I was surprised that borrowing notes from someone else won’t help you learn at all. Highlighting connections and applications is a good idea. Don’t highlight whole passages. I’ll use the group study rules (setting a goal and agenda, setting criteria for participation, keeping a learning goal in mind, letting everyone ask/answer questions, and making sure any member can express the group understanding) to be able to learn well in groups. Video 5: Take positive steps to raise grades after bombing an exam. Don’t panic or go into denial. Positive steps include examining how you prepared (it’s better to over-prepare than to not), review the exam (compare errors with notes), talk to your teacher (“faculty are not your enemy”), examine study habits (good or bad study strategies?), and develop a plan. Don’t let other assignments from other classes slide while trying to raise your grade. I’ll set goals if (and probably when) I blow an exam to improve and raise my grade....
