Music 105 Chapter 9 Review Questions 1. Name and describe three cultural/political events which occurred in the 1960s. How had the character and spirit of American popular music changed since the 1950s? The civil rights movement, the Vietnam War, and the assassination of President John F. Kennedy were the three events at the occurred in the 60s. Popular Music played a role of un precedented centrality and importance in defining the character and spirit of political and cultural events of this period.

2. What was the number one song in January 1960 (the “turn of the decade”)? What did it sound like? Why is this “historically inconvenient fact” worth mentioning? The number 1 song in January was called “The Twist” which was a teen-oriented rock ‘n’ roll song using a twelve-bar blues structure that celebrated a simple, hip-swiveling dance step that was gaining some popularity among young African Americans.

3. Describe the history of “The Twist”. Who released the song first? Who covered it? How did it become so popular? How did this influence the teenage culture surrounding rock n’ roll? The twist was released by the group Hank Ballard and the Midnighters. Chubby Checker was one of the artists that covered the song. The track was heavily promoted which was a huge reason why it became so popular. This song was not only a hit but the dance caught the eye of many teens around the world, and they had the opportunity to observe it on the American BandStand.

4. Describe the career of Phil Spector. How did he get his start? How did he describe his music? What was the “base of operations” for him and other aspiring songwriters of the time? Phil Spector was a musician and songwriter also known for his model for the production and marketing of pop records. Phil Spector's Wrecking Crew was ensuring that the highest level of of instrumental musicianship was always aware.

5. Describe the production of the two Spector productions we heard: “Be My Baby” and “Uptown”. What instruments were used? What associations are evoked by these instruments and the production? Performed by the Ronnettes and composed by Phil Spector. One of the biggest hits Spector produced and an illustration of Philles Wall of Sound.

6. Describe the career of Barry Gordy. What record label did he found? Where did it get its name? How was the label unique? Barry Gordy was a talented songwriter and producer who created clues and gospel based pop music created to appeal to the public. He also created his own producing and marketing organization in Detroit called Motown after "Motor town." He kept it under African American control.

7. What songs did we hear which were released by Gordy’s label? Who produced and performed these songs? What instruments were played? What musical elements are present? Gordy’s label released soul music based on doo-wop tradition and slick cosmopolitan sound. He was expert at constructing music production. He contributed to house band called Funk Brothers.

8. Describe the career of Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys. How did their music develop throughout the years? Songwriting Brian Wilson and co-founder and multi-tasking leader of the Beach Boys. He combined arranging, producing, and songwriting skills which made him a significant innovator in music production.

9. What recording artist were the Beach Boys emulating in their songs “Surfin’ USA” and “Fun, Fun, Fun”? How specifically did they emulate this artist in each song?

The Beach Boys first top 10 hit, borrowed the music of Chuck Berry's Sweet Little 16. “Fun, Fun, Fun” was the groups first hit of 64 which evoked Chuck Berry. The solo guitar introduction straight from from Berry's Roll Over Beethoven and Johnny B Goode.

10. Describe the career of the Beatles. What band did they model themselves after? What major decision did the band make in 1966? What songs did we hear by the Beatles, and how do they reflect the different stages of their development as a band?

The Beatles played at clubs in Liverpool. In Hamburg, Germany they covered songs by American rock n roll artists they most admired. Their commercial success and popularity demonstrated them as the greatest popular musicians of the 20th century. The Beatles started out at as a performing band modeled on Buddy Holly's band The Crickets. John Lennon and George Harrison as lead rhythm guitar and vocals, Paul McCartney as bass and vocals, and Ringo Starr as occasional vocals.

11. What were the unique, groundbreaking elements in the Beach Boy’s recording of “Good Vibrations” (on page 313)?

It was an unprecedented time and expense for one song, which set an example for other rock albums. It influenced the Beatles to write Sgt. Pepper. It consisted of theremin, multiple overdubs, complicated song form,and had sophisticated arrangements, etc.

12. What is bugalú? Who performed it? What was their biggest hit? What does it sound like? Bugalu is a genre of Latin music and dance which was popular in the United States in the 1960s. Boogaloo originated in NYC mainly among teenage Latinos.

13. What was Ray Barreto’s big hit song? Where was he from and how did his culture affect his music? What was the song about? In 1962, Ray Barretto recorded his first hit, "El Watusi.” He was an American of Puerto Rican descent conga drummer and bandleader. Baretto played a majority of Latin music styles. Watusi was one of the most popular dances during the 1960s in the US, which was a name for the Tutsi people of Africa, whose traditions consisted of dances.

14. What is bossa nova? What country does it come from? Who performed it? What was a big bossa nova hit? How did it become popular in the United States? Bossa Nova came from the tropical beaches of Rio de Janeiro, consisting of small groups of middle-class students, artists and musicians. It was a soft samba based on traditional Brazilian

music and rhythms, American jazz, with new styles of Portuguese lyrics. It became popular due to Antônio Carlos Jobim, a composer and João Gilberto, a guitarist and singer who came to Rio from the poorer Bahia region.

15. Describe the career of Herb Alpert. How did he get his start in the music business? What group did he form? What kind of music did he play, and what countries folk music inspired him? Herb Alpert was a talented American musician bandleader and solo artist and co-founded A&M Records label. Alpert was friends with music executive named Jerry Moss, and they both liked driving to Tijuana, Mexico....
