Description

1. What does Rajen Makhijani mean by meeting the OTHER? Write at least 2 sentences. When Rajen says the other, he means that, when you look at a circumstance, one side may see something simple (earning success), and the other side sees those very simple and small luxuries that are taken for granted by so many. Because of where he is from, interpretations and decisions are completely based on the individual. 2. Why does Rajen Makhijani say that everything you see is conditioned by the socioeconomic class that you come from? (Socioeconomic class is a combination of parental income, parental education, and parental occupational prestige) Write at least 2 sentences. Different classes enjoy different levels of “luxuries” of life. If there were 2 options, individuals would make different decisions on the “best choice” because of what they have access to and what they prioritize.

3. Explain Rajen Makhijani’s argument in his example where he says that choosing a cup of tea is more rational than choosing to purchase health insurance. Write at least 2 sentences. Insurance may not/does not cover the risks of purchasing this expensive item. The medical technology and benefits of health insurance create more costs and there is still a very large risk that someone may not be healed/could die. So why not purchase a cup of tea now that won’t cost you even more late. There are more risks in their lives than possible medical issues as well.

4. Do you think the Barken textbook in the section “Consquences of Poverty” gives a balanced view about people in poverty? Why or why not? Write at least 3 sentences. stereotype: a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. I thought the textbook did a great job at breaking down the “why” and the “how” people enter into and remain in poverty, but it did only focus on the negatives. There’s more than one side to every story and what was said in the textbook seemed to be said to make the reader take pity on these people. This can be great if it moves on to donate time or want to help the poor, but it does not mean that they are living these terrible lives and all they need is “saving” from us.

5. Rajen Makhijani seems to argue that those who are not poor tend to negatively stereotype people who are poor. In contrast to the typical negative stereotype of poor people, what might we view as a positive characteristic of many poor people? Give an example or examples. Write at least 3 sentences. As Rajen stated there are some things that impoverished individuals are doing better with than the rich, such as their outlook and the meaning of life. They are also able to appreciate and take value in the simpler things in life that many takes for granted. They are able to be motivated and empowered much easier than the rich....
