Description

Address the following questions using complete sentences: 1. Tan Le mentions three pieces of a puzzle, write 3-4 sentences discussing and giving your reaction to the “man burning life’s work” piece. This man had dedicated his whole life to poetry, playwriting, and based it all on the country’s freedom and unity. When it no longer was, his whole life’s work was pointless and thus he destroyed all of it. I instantly felt for her mother, who already had young girls and was about to enter into an arranged marriage. Knowing she had to flee immediately because she has now lost her guide, and her family name was in turmoil; one can only guess how her husband would have treated her. Knowing that she is now widowed from this man, the grandmother must have also truly had no other choice, or she would have died there anyways.

2. Tan Le mentions three pieces of a puzzle, write 3-4 sentences discussing and giving your reaction to the “boat out to sea” piece. I have heard of refugees fleeing on boats, but not normally firsthand accounts from someone who’s earliest memory is knowing her mom had a special juice that would kill them if things went south. The pure terror and possibility of putting her daughters in such a situation must have rested so heavily on her mother that it really put the severity and huge risks associated with staying and fleeing into perspective: They both had terrible consequences but fleeing had that one speck of hope, and that’s what they clung to. 3. Tan Le mentions three pieces of a puzzle, write 3-4 sentences discussing and giving your reaction to the “shaping a new life” piece. A lot of people, especially refugees, used to imagine that fleeing a country looked like the hardest part was surviving the travel from point A to B, but it isn’t rainbows and just jumping into the workforce. These are people of a totally different culture, language, abilities, etc! They can’t just start living the dream, but for them, it was worth it. You can really tell how traumatic the risk of the boat was for her mother considering how bad her PTSD was for basically the rest of her life. Being on edge that any moment the small boat could be taken over and that she would have to murder her young daughters probably went through her mind every day that she would ever have to make that kind of decision.

4. Tan Le ends her talk saying that she would like to have children. She worries about them having privilege, a life of ease, a sense of entitlement. She wishes that she could safely provide for them a life of challenge like the life she has had. Write 4-5 sentences discussing your reaction to her “wish “or to other parts of the video

I can understand her perspective of the wish. From her understanding, she is very mindful of how she grew up and the lessons she had to learn to function in society. When you come from the inside, these things just come to you and you basically live in a bubble of your functioning society; she wants her children to have to go out of their comfort zones every day like she had to. She comes from a long line of extremely independent and fearless women, mainly because they had to be, but she wants her kids to carry themselves like this as well and fears they won’t since they would be brought into a world already shaped and paved for them....
