What is Application Software?
Application software is a program or group of programs designed for end users. It enable a user to perform some specific task used to operate a computer. Examples of an application include a word processor, a spreadsheet, an accounting application and a web browser.
Example of Application Software:
1. Word Processing Software: Allows users to create, edit a document. Example: Microsoft Word, Word Pad 2. Spreadsheet Software: Allows users to create document and perform calculation. Example: Microsoft Excel, Lotus1-2-3, Google sheet 3. Database Software: Allows users to store and retrieve vast amount of data. Example: Microsoft Access, MySQL, Oracle 4. Presentation Graphic Software: Allows users to create visual presentation. Example: Microsoft Power Point, Google slide
5. Multimedia Software: Allows users to create image, audio, video etc. Example: Real Player, Media Player.
There are many applications software available today and are design for a specific purpose, when selecting one should select the right software for a specific task. All computers are sold with software, additionally software may be bought to perform specific task include:
Entertainment- game Home and personal- CD-ROM encyclopedia Productive software- word processing and spread sheet. Specialist software- desktop publishing and graphic package Categories of application software General – purpose software- “off the shelf software” These are not written for any specific business or organization, but can be used to adapt to their specific needs. Eg. Spreadsheet-- prepare end of term report Word-processing--Write letter to parents For business they can be used to perform different task; accounting or memo- writing
Integrated software
An integrated software package is a set of related programs combine in a unified package that allow data to be transfer easily between program. Eg. Microsoft office, lotus and Microsoft Work.
Advantage Data can be transfer easily from computer to another It takes up less disk space than individual application It is less usually cheaper than purchasing the package individually Disadvantage Not all the feature of single application is included Some integrated packages do not contain all the application that may be required to complete a task
Specialized Software Software that are written for a specific task rather that for a board application area. These programs provide facilities specifically for the purpose for which they are designed. Eg. Payroll Specialized software- expert system Medical expert system Accounting program Theatre & booking systems Customized Software This refer to general purpose software which has been modified to meet the needs of an organization better. These packages are customized through the writing of code or macros. Custom –written (tailor -made) software
These are software written to meet the specific needs of a company. Every company is unique and can have unique needs. The software is written by programmers within the company or it may be contracted at the software house.
Advantage The software developers deliver and install the software and train the end –users, in the use of the new product. If perform task that general- purpose software can’t perform
Disadvantage Cost- to develop software is usually high Lengthy development time – it takes time to acquire the information necessary and write the codes for the new software....
