Cognitive Psychology PSY 4073 Dr. Goldstein – Arkansas Tech University In-Class Application Assignment One key skill to develop in college is the ability to apply the concepts you learn to real-world problems. Please read and answer the question described below. Your answer is to be written on lined paper. On the top line should be titled “Application Assignment #1: Perception” and you should include the date and your name. On Tuesday:   

You will work in pairs of two to discuss your thoughts on how to answer the following prompt and the course material. At the end of class, you will turn in a statement regarding your discussion and what each member contributed in preparation. You will receive 5 points toward the 40 points for the assignment for this portion of the assignment.

On Thursday:    

You will be given 50 minutes during class to formalize and complete your final answer. You earn up to 30 points towards the 40 points for the assignment based on your answer. See the rubric on how this portion will be graded. Finally, for the last 30 minutes of the class we will have a group discussion. - During the discussion will discuss the how everyone answered the question related topics that emerge. - You will receive 5 points towards the 40 points for the assignment by participating in the discussion

Using standard sentences and paragraphs for this assignment. A standard answer will require multiple paragraphs. Your answers should be supported by information from the textbook and lecture. It is not enough to just provide the definitions to concepts. See rubric for more details. Keep in mind that the grade is based on whether you effectively answer the specific questions you are being asked. Remember to answer all components of the assignment. Assignment: You have been approached by an artificial intelligence company. The company wants to make a robot that is as close to a human as possible. Their problem is trying to decide which approach to human perception to model the robot’s perception. The robotic company wants the two best approaches to attempt to recreate human perception in their robot. Recommend two different designs for the robot’s perception that will be most effective in creating a robot with perception that is indistinguishable from a human. You will present the

designs in order from best to second best. First, describe the components that make-up the first design recommendation. This should include describing the terms/concepts as well as demonstrating the existence of the concepts with supporting research. The robotics’ company are turning to you as the expects. You need to remember they do not know what you know, and you must explain it to them so they can understand. Your recommendation should not be limited to only one concept. You want to be creative in your answer and consider combining multiple approaches to what is needed to replicate human perception. Second, you will repeat what has been discussed previously for the second design that you pitch to the robotics company. Finally, you will explain why you chose these concepts and approaches to perception over others. Thursday, January 23rd:   
