CHIPOTLE’S HIRING PROCESS

Chipotle’s Hiring Process Daniel Smith ECPI University

CHIPOTLE’S HIRING PROCESS The business I have been using for these application assignments has been Chipotle. This week we will dive deeper into the process they use when hiring candidates for their job listings. I will present the findings after doing some research into job current job postings through their websites or external hiring agencies, as well as dig into the typical requirements and compensation and benefits offered through multiple sites on the internet.

Job Posting The job posting is for the General Manager position at a Chipotle location in Ashville, North Carolina. https://jobs.chipotle.com/job/asheville/general-manager/282/16941265 Job Description The job description is pretty standard as far as the similar job descriptions for general managers that I have come across, including the ones at my own job where I was general manager. “As general manager, you'll be involved in all aspects of the business and restaurant operations. Customer satisfaction should be your driving motivation, but you should also be able to utilize P&L statements and other technologies to manage and exceed profit goals. You'll be responsible for sourcing, hiring, coaching and motivating employees while providing a safe and welcoming work environment.” (Seasoned, 2020) Some of the key responsibilities listed for the job include overseeing both the front or house and back of house operations to make sure all aspects of the store are running and complying with both company policy and local food inspector standards. The general manager is responsible for all the hiring and development of current team members. They are also expected to try to boost sales and grow the brand through positive customer experiences.

CHIPOTLE’S HIRING PROCESS I was interest in this job as I already have all the prior requirements and understand the job description perfectly as it aligns with the ones I have signed in the past at prior jobs. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA’s) The only knowledge or skills that they recommend having an excellence in would be customer service, which is a given for any management position anywhere, problem solving as well, which is needed as managers tend to have to juggle many different tasks at one time. Leadership and communication were another ability wanted for people looking to fill this position as you need to lead to run a store and to lead effectively you need to have good communication skills. Additional Requirements Must have a basic understanding of knowing the ins and outs of food management including profit and loss statements. Previous restaurant experience is critical for this position. Checks and Tests Like most companies these days, restaurants often will perform a background check on their employees before offering a job. They only ask about felonies on their application but that alone is not disqualifying for Chipotle. According to jobsforfelonshub, Chipotles stance on felon hires is as follows, “Anyone is welcome to apply to our restaurants, and if someone is considered for employment, all of these issues will be looked into. We encourage anyone to apply” (Garcia, 2020) Compensation I was not able to see the exact offer for the general manager for that specific listing, but I did a search and found the average general manager for Chipotle makes $54,391 with an additional $4000 in bonus’s and incentives. (GlassDoor, 2020) Other benefits the company 3

CHIPOTLE’S HIRING PROCESS mentions includes medical and dental insurance, paid time off, career growth and other bonus’s and incentives. When looking for general manager positions I would look at websites and compare the different salaries and benefits and even if I’m not applying to that company, I could still use data I’ve gathered to try to leverage a better pay by knowing what competitors will pay for the same positions. Conclusion The job I was looking at was for the general manager, so that is already the top level you could have within the store. But looking at lower level jobs they all describe an opportunity for career growth so I believe that Chipotle as well would have a good culture of inhouse hiring for open positions, and opportunity for general managers to be able to move up further in the corporate ladder onto regional and state operators.
