Brandon Leo November 12, 2020 Application of Media Theory in Real Life Assignment

Social Cognitive Theory and Videogames

Theory Overview: The social cognitive theory itself focuses on creating a framework for understanding how people actively shape and are shaped by their environment. (Vinney 2019) Personally, this is one of my favorite theories because of how easily it can be applied to every person. Every person has experienced the social cognitive theory. The theory focuses on individuals being products of their environment due to imitations of family members, role models, etc. However, for this assignment I will be focusing on Albert Bandura’s view on the theory, and applying it to our current world. According to Mollie Cahillane for DAILYMAIL.com, parents are raising concern after a study was released that on average, children play video games for nearly 15 hours a week. (Cahillane 2018) This kind of screen time is worthy of concern, considering the article also talks about parents being worried about the kind of violence and imagery their children are spending so much time with. Context Overview: My goal is to apply the social cognitive theory and explain how good and bad things can happen regardless to media usage, or how long a kid is playing videogames for. Specifically, my application of this theory will include how children growing up in 2020, and the following years, will deal with their increased exposure to media and videogames. Application of Theory to Context: Children in their quarantines will be forced to entertain themselves in other ways than physical

contact, and video games are perfect for that. I will argue that I do not believe that this upcoming generation will be any more aggressive than the previous because of this media usage. The social cognitive theory can be applied because of the theory’s idea of children being shaped by their environment. Applying this theory to our modern life would be very important because we can focus on the media/videogame usage and how it effects the individual. An example of this theory’s importance, would be when Bandura’s theory was actually used, “… successfully to create video games that create positive behavior outcomes” (Starks 2014) The idea of video game companies going out of their way to apply this theory to their own development proves how impactful this theory truly is. It also proves that this is a legitimate concern, especially in our current situation. Missing Links: The majority of aspects of social cognitive theory are explained and belong with the context, however there is one aspect of the theory that does not belong. Unfortunately, the aspect of reinforcements does not belong because this is an aspect that not everyone has similar experiences with. Some individuals may not have both parents at home, while others have siblings, or other figures of reinforcements. Otherwise, I believe the aspects of the theory are explained thoroughly.
