APPLYING BANDAGING OBJECTIVES The following are the objectives of applying bandaging -To keep infection controlling out of the wound -To apply pressure controlling bleeding -To provide a surface for the platelets, (glue) to bind with and coagulate -To support a medical device such as a splint, or its own to provide support to the body. INTRODUCTION This is a process carried out on an individual either at the hospital or at home by an health professional or caregiver respectively in other to prevent excessive loss of blood and the setting in of infection on a cut or injured part of the body with the use of a clean sterile pieces of cloth called BANDAGE PURPOSE OR AIMS OF BANDAGING -Provide support to the wound and surrounding tissues -Immobilize incisions under tension and skin grafts -Provide protection from contaminants and subsequently infection -Facilitate coaptation of wound edges -To reduce swelling DEFINITION According to bandaging is define: 1-As a process of applying a strip of fabric used especially to cover, dress and bind up wounds. 2-As a process of applying a flexible strip or band used to cover, strengthen, or compress something with the use of a bandage ADVANTAGES OF BANDAGING -To support medical device e g splint -To restrict the movement of a part of the body -To prevent excessive bleeding that could lead to anaemia -Prevention of infection -To reduce pain

-For comfortability -Absorption of exudates DISADVANTAGES OF BANDAGING -Neorosis could occur as a result of over tightening of the bandage or decrease supply of blood and O2 to the affected area -insufficient ventilation to the wounded or injured area -Retention of smell -Accumulation of dead cells and tissues PROCEDURES IN BANDAGING Tray with the following 1-Bandage at appropriate size 2-Safety pin 3-Adhered tape if necessary 4-Scissors CAPELINE BANDAGE FOR THE SCALP 1-This is applied from the patient. Two 5cm bandage are fastened in the centre, with the roll of each held upwards 2-Start with the joint in the centre of the forehead pass both bandage in opposite directions, backward to the rape of the neck and cross the ends. 3-One bandage is taken round and the forehead while the other is passed backward and forward across the top and side of the scalp 4-The first turn across the top of the head as placed over centre. As this bandage reaches the front of the forehead, the second bandage encircling the head passes across it and fixed the turn 5- The same fixation is made each time at the back the following turns across the top of the head taken 6-Finish with a complete turn on the forehead...
