Lesson 16: Army Problem Solving Process Homework

Step 1: Identify the Problem The problem with college students nowadays is that they have no clue to pick for a major; mainly because they have no idea of what they are good at or have any idea of what they want to do with their life after high school and they are afraid that they won’t be able to change their major later on if they like something else. - The Army problem solving process is used here to describe what the problem is and what the root of the problem is. Step 2: Gather Information  According to a study at the University of Florida, 61% of their students change their major by the end of their sophomore year.  It’s a national statistic that nearly half of the college students entering college are undecided about their major.  If you have multiple interests, you have multiple strategies in combining those interests. - The Army problem solving process is used here to gather statistics and facts to support your thesis. Step 3: Develop Criteria After a month or 5-6 weeks of class, people become more comfortable in college and are able to select a major because they’ve been in class and start to get a good idea of what they are good at and know what they want to do in the future. - The Army problem solving process is used here to develop criteria that will help the solver to pick out different possible solutions. Step 4: Generate Possible Solutions  Talk to people in different majors and ask them questions about their certain major  Beside your core classes, take classes that seem interesting to you and see how you feel while taking them  Think and write down what you think you are good at and then see if your college has any major similar to those ideas you wrote down  Try looking into more than 2 majors your first two years of college - The Army problem solving process is used here to come up with possible solutions to solve the problem. And coming up with more than 2 solutions helps you look forward and how to implement your chosen solution.

Step 5: Analyze Possible Solutions  By asking questions to those who are majoring in different field, you are able to get insight from someone who is dealing with the major up close and personal.  If you take classes that interest you besides your core classes, you might find something that you love and therefore decide to major in that.  By writing down what your good at, you can see what major matches your characteristics.  If you take classes that go towards 2 or more majors, you might find that “true love” and major in it in the future. - The Army problem solution process is used here to analyze the possible solutions. And by doing this we are able to break down what solution stands out more and will be the most effective. Step 6: Compare Possible Solutions Asking someone in their major provides better than insight than going into a major without knowing anything about it and having to learn it on the fly. But if you take those specialty classes, then you may discover that you’re good at that trade and decide to major in it. If you write down what you’re good at, then you’ll be able to see what your good at and apply that to looking for what major matches those characteristics. - The Army problem solving process is used here to compare all the possible solutions, both the pros and cons of each one. And by doing this, we are able to identify which solution is best fit to answer the problem. Step 7: Make and Implement the Decision Besides your core classes, try taking classes that interest you and you never know; you may find something that you’re really good at and decide to major in that area. So when you go to register for classes for the following term, look ahead for classes that interest you and make sure you sign up for them since classes are first come, first served. - The Army problem solving process is used here in the fact that we came up with a decision and we are implement the decision that we gathered information on, compared other possible solutions but determined that this solution was best suited for the problem....
