Art 1010 Art Nouveau LIST 07/11/17

“Dragonfly Woman Corsage Ornament,” René Lalique, (1897-1898)

This ornament called “Dragonfly Woman Corsage Ornament”, by Rene Lalique is very unique in that it has a female torso and gryphon claws. This specific jewelry was owned by a wealthy Armenian collector named Calouste Guldbenkian and worn once by Sarah Bernhardt. This piece has delicate wings made of gold but the points are all hinged so they won’t be hurtful to the person wearing it. It also is made of the beautiful gems diamond and enamel as well. It does not use a variety of color since it has a very noticeable gold frame but you can see a beautiful turquoise color on the abdomen and wings have a delicate mix of blues and greens.

The person who created this beautiful piece was named Rene Lalique. He was born in the rural 19th century in the pre-industrialized Europe. This artist is remembered for is jewelry and glass. Some of his accomplishments had been recognized during the changing time period wwihc was during the Civil war to World War II. His knowledge was not just to serve the market but also being innovative and talented as well.

“Wall Clock”, Antoni Gaudi, 1906-1910

This art called “Wall Clock”, by Antoni Gaudi was created for the Casa Mila an apartment building he designed in Barcelona. The asymmetrical leafy swirls surrounding the timepiece was inspired by the gilded curves of the rococo period, which was a very important influence on Art Nouveau designers. This wall clock was in the complete gold color where the outline of the clock was almost only faintly seen with the main importance on the details surrounding it. You could be able to see firm lines of the leaves represented the resemblance of a leaf by the roots on it. This wall clock was made by the materials wood, brass and gold leaf.

To describe the artist Antoni Gaudi he was born in 1852 and took the interest in architecture in a very young age. He was a part of the Catalan Modernista movement. In 1902 his designs started to defy the conventional stylistic classification. He was very known for his two Barcelona apartment buildings: The Casa Bastilo and Casa Mila.

“Entrance to the Métropolitan” Hector Guimard, 1905

“Entrance to the Metropolitan” was created by the Parisian architect Hector Guimard. He was told to create this to not only give an entry to the Paris Metro but also to help bring the new mode of transportation appealing to the Parisians. This was designed in the style Art Nouveau which drew inspiration to the natural and natural forms. The gates curvilinear lines and patterns were inspired by the vines and flowers. The symmetrical floral lights frame on the sign were lighting the entrance and advertising the metro. The idea of blending designs, architecture and advertisement were very important toward bring modern ideas.

A little bit about the artist Hector Guimard is that he was the one to introduce Art Nouveau in Paris. He was born in Lyon in 1867 and was known for his interior designing and designer of art Nouveau objects. He had studied from 1882 to 1885 at the Ecole Nationale des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. He had not only creating this artistic entrance but also many more featuring the wrought iron, bronze and glass. He is regarded as the leading exponent of the art nouveau style or also called “Style Guimard” in France.

“Cobra Chair & Desk” Carlo Bugatti, 1902

To describe this specific piece called “Cobra Chair and Desk” as the name states the chair and are shaped as snakes. This particular object has very defined curves to represent the reptile. There aren’t many colors used besides the oak-ish color of the wood and designs that have a slight tint of black and blue. Since this is a work of a carpenter the whole object is made of wood. You can see that the head of the chair represents like the head of the snake of the body of desk represents the body of the snake. Although the shape is mostly curvy, the feet of both the leg and desk and very pointy.

The designer of this unique piece called “Cobra Chair and Desk” was Carlo Bugatti. He was an Italian furniture designer that was most active in the Art Nouveau Era around the 1900’s. His work was very unique and recognizable by anyone. During this time the most three prominent cultures were the Gothic, Japan and Islamic world and just like everyone else Bugatti combined these to a unique way and called it his. When the queen of Italy commended Bugatti on his “Mooresque” he responded, “You are mistaken, Majesty, this style is mine!”

“Wisteria Table Lamp” Tiffany Studios, 1905

To describe this beautiful and colorful piece called “Wisteria Table Lamp it has a look of blended and falling colors to the floor. Since it seems to look like the material is made of glass it looks very luminescent and uses monochromatic colors with the tint shades of blue. Looking at it with a broader perspective this peace looks like a tree, where the stump is the leg of the lamp.

Tiffany Studios is a creative enterprise operated by various names through the years. Tiffany was the president and art director and primary figure for all the production. She was the son of Charles Lewis Tiffany who was the founder of the successful and influential jewelry firm. He created his specific design theory based on his own ideals which were interpreted creatively.

“Thanksgiving No. from The Chap-Book” William H. Bradley, 1894

This artwork called “Thanksgiving No. from The Chap-Book” by Bradley seems to be a type of text design. To look at the overall design, it is an image of two women who look congruent except for the size of both of them. They seem to be holding a dish which I think represents food. The style of the art seems to look like it has been painted since the arcs seem to be like paint brush curves that are mainly of three prominent colors which are black, red and blue. This seems to be like an image from a cover of a book.

Some information about the artist who made this illustration called “Thanksgiving No. from The Chap-Book” was William H. Bradley. He was born in Boston was a largely a self-taught artist. He worked in a printer’s workshop at the age of twelve which taught him about typesetting, advertisements and layouts. His illustration on the chap-book had titled the twins, which was the first American Nouveau Art poster.

“Portrait of Félix Fénéon” Paul Signac, 1890

To describe this art called “Portrait of Félix Fénéon” by Paul Signac it is a beautiful painting that stores a lot of texture. In the image it looks like a magician that is in the moment of performing a magic show where there are swirls and colors that represent the imagery of the fantasy. The mood of this painting is very playful and childish which would attract audience of all ages. The focus of this painting goes toward the center of the swirl that is the mixture of all the colors. While there are many colors the importance of the painting also mainly goes toward the magician since he is the hero for the painting.

Paul Victor Jules Signac was the artist for this painting. He was a French neo-impressionist painter who was working with Georges Seurat and helped develop the pointillist style. He was born in Paris and followed a course of training in architecture before he decided at the age of

eighteen to pursue his career as a painter.



“Dragonfly Coupe” Émile Gallé, 1903

To describe this masterpiece called “Dragonfly Coupe” it is a mix of many things. From the outer point of view, it looks like a vase or cup made of marble that looks very elegant. It has a painting of a bird that looks like a seagull or eagle that is soaring through the sky. The top part of the coupe looks like a flower such a tulip where the center there would be the bulb. The stem of the cup would be the handle of the coupe with a abstract design of a swirl that looks like a life coiled.

Emile Galle is a French designer who was known for his naturalistic designs combined with innovative techniques. He was also a pioneering glass maker of the early 19th and 20th century. He took his inspiration from nature and plants along with Japanese design. His work was also described as “poetry in a glass.

“Tassel House, Brussels” Victor Horta, 1892-1893

This piece called “Tassel House, Brussels” by Victor Horta looks so elegant was a spiral staircase. You could also see the elegance by the colors they use of golden, gold and soft pink. It shows a very sophisticated image of a staircase that would be placed in a palace or a royal place. In a figurative way it shows like an entrance to above or a spiritual height and has a very godly and beautiful look. This specific artwork seems like it was done as a painting where the stairs shape was very significant and defined. The twirls on the edge of staircase resembles flowers or roses.

The artist named Victor Horta was widely known for his influential architecture of the late 19th century. His style was depicted in a wide variety of beautiful buildings throughout Belgium. He pioneered the use of iron, steel, and drawing motifs from nature in his works. Many of his work are known as iconic examples of Art Nouveau architecture.

“Five Swans” Otto Eckmann, 1897

This piece called “Five Swans” by Otto Eckmann is a beautiful canvas which a pretty image. It is of many swans that are swimming on a lake. You are able to see the reflection of the sun on the lake of squiggly lines of white and tints of orange. The lake looks like it is following a very long path with a vertical pathway. It looks like the painting was done to represent the autumn season since it looks like there are leaves falling on the shore as well as the grass near the shore. The overall painting looks like it is made on a cloth as a wall hanging.

The artist Otto Eckmann is a painter, printmaker, typographer and crafts designer. He turned to graphic and crafts design especially for embroidery. He had done numerous illustrations for the journals “Pan” and “Jugend” and was a professor of applied arts in Berlin. In 1900 he had created the Eckmann script which matched the Jugendstil ideal of form. He had also designed advertising material for industries.
