Description

ARTS3097 Essay Plan Activism and social change are much more accessible now with the development of digital platform. Can social media activism change global politics? Social media now plays a key role in delivering public information and allows people to engage in social and political discussion. Paragraph 1: Discuss the spread of awareness of the poll/petition Social media is an effective tool to trigger change in policy as it allows events to gain more traction (Mavrodieva, Rachman, Harahap and Shaw, 2019). Chanel Contos, a Sydney private school girl, used her platform on Instagram to interact with her followers on the topic of sexual assault. This poll gained so much traction that Chanel went on to create a petition to implement sexual consent education in schools much younger than it is taught. Whilst her Instagram poll asked about sexual assault experiences with specific emphasis on encounters with Sydney private school boys, thousands of testimonies of sexual assault and harassment from all over the world flooded through. Paragraph 2: Discuss produsage and how this impacted the petition This small poll became so much more when Chanel began appearing on television news programs and newspapers began reporting on her work. Whilst social media heightens the potential visibility and introduce the possibility of public engagement, it is also true that most content online is obscured and reconsumed by others in a consumer collaborative manner (Bruns & Schmidt 2011). In this paragraph I will discuss more about how produsage impacted positively and negatively the spreading of this sexual assault campaign. Paragraph 3 – Discuss the idea that online spaces are sealed sites and unrelated to real life. ‘The myth of cyberspace’ and the fact that, offline contexts permeate online activities, and online activities bleed endlessly back to reshape what happens offline.’ (Baym & boyd, 2012) I will also discuss in this paragraph trolling of the sexual assault petition and the result that the ‘myth of cyberspace’ has had on social and political change. Somewhere in these paragraphs or potentially paragraph four, I will explore how far Chanel has taken this campaign and how she has now established ‘Operation Vest’; a project which works alongside police so that survivors can report sexual assault without action being taken.

Some other points: - Chanel Contos - consent reform in education - Sexual harassment education – catcalling - The catalyst of Chanel’s argument is that systemic gender-based violence is upheld by every man who fails to intervene. It is upheld by every man who chooses to distance himself from the issue rather than hold the men around him accountable. It is upheld

by every man who knows a man who has hurt someone but chose to look away because it ‘wasn’t his business’.
