In Rudaki’s poem “Juye-Muliyan” he is describing the beauties of Bukhara as a way to bring the Amir back to Bukhara from Herat. In the poem we can see the listed conventions for classical Persian poetry that Yarshater discuses. The first one he talks about is Preponderance of Poetry, this characteristic of Persian poetry speaks to the “deepest sentiments” (Yarshater, 15). In Rudaki’s poem he uses the Amir’s sentiments of Bukhara in an effort to draw him back to his home. He speaks of the scents of Bukhara to invoke the Amir’s deepest sentiments; “JuyeMuliy9n’s scent drifts my way, As do memories of a kind friend” (Rudaki). The second characteristic that Yashater discusses is “Tangential” Structure and Organization where poems are more “descriptive rather than dramatic, expressionist rather than naturalistic, organic rather than architectural (Yashater, 16). In “Juye-Muliyan” Rudaki descriptions of Bukhara for example “Thrilled to see a friend, the Jayhun’s waves Leap halfway up our horses’ flanks (Rudaki)” here he is using descriptive and naturalistic writing. For the third characteristic “Decorative Tendency”, Yarshater explains how the poem was recited by Rudaki with a harp (18). For the final characteristic “Conventionality”, this poem is a qasida (ode) since the poem as an intention in mind: indirectly convincing the Amir to come back to Bukhara (Yashater 20).
