Which performer did you like the best? Why? Are you similar to them in any way? The performer that I liked the best was Robert. His work was good from what the film showed, he seems funny and easy to get along with. Also because no matter what happened, how much he struggled, he always made it through. The only thing that I can relate to is having family members with cancer and losing them. What is Deaf culture? Did you see any examples in the film of Deaf community/Deaf culture? Deaf culture is group that is able to connect because they are deaf; these people usually have same beliefs. Yes deaf community and deaf culture are both shown many times in the film. What did you think of TL saying she’s “not deaf enough”? If you speak, can you still be deaf? I think that sad that someone can be seen as not deaf enough; especially since she lost a lot of her hearing when she was 8. Yes, some deaf people can speak. How did the scene with Robert talking with his mother affect you? Can you communicate with your parents? What would you do if you were a parent and your child had a different language? This scene made me sad, knowing that he was never able to effectively communicate with his mother and that she never really made an effort to learn ASL. Yes, I can communicate with my parents we are all hearing. If I was a parent and my child had a different language, I would do everything I could to learn so we could communicate. I think communication is very important. What did CJ do after no one showed up at his performance in North Carolina? Do you think he was successful with his International Sign Language Theater Festival? Why? Have you ever been disappointed and what did you do?He said that it was a huge mistake and packed up and went home. I think that he is very successful within the deaf community, because many people know him and it looked like many were happy and excited to see and meet him. Yes, I was initially mad, but decided that it wasn’t worth it; I am a strong believer that everything happens for a reason. What do you think of TL playing the role of Sarah in the stage production of Children of a Lesser God? Do you think a hard of hearing actor should be cast in a deaf role? What about a hearing actor? Why or why not? I think that TL did a good job in her role, and that it is good for her to be back in the deaf community. Yes, I think that it is okay. I don’t think that it should really matter either way, the person is playing a character. Who produced Bob’s Beethoven’s Nightmare show at the El Rey Theatre? How did he make the show a success? What would you do if you wanted to put on a show? Bob was the director, producer and drummer in the show. (didn’t get to it) If I wanted to but on a show my first step would be talk to someone at KCC in drama or even TCR downtown. How did you feel watching these four artists face their challenges? I feel a lot, these artists go through a lot of struggles and always preserver to become better. All the challenges that they faced they made it through and it seems like they are always able to learn something and they have been shaped because of them. What needs to change in America to give hearing people exposure to ASL and Deaf

culture? Somethings that need to change would be to get deaf and hearing communities be more integrated, also get rid of the social stigmas that hearing people see about deaf people, get hearing people to understand that they can still communicate. 10. Were there any new signs that you saw in the film? Any familiar signs that you remember from class? Yes there were many new signs, but there were also many signs that I recognized. 11. Robert mentions that Deaf people don't use just one form of sign language and demonstrates various methods with the line “ I enjoy this program”: fingerspelling, ASL, SEE, PSE, ASL, oral and tactile. Why are there different ways to communicate? What is the difference between each? Are there other ways to communicate? Fingerspelling is spelling everything out ASL- American Sign Language SEE - Signed Exact English PSE - Pidgin Signed English-- combination of ASL and english Oral-using mouth to be verbal or read lips Tactile-feeling the signs To help accommodate for everyone, hearing, hard of hearing, deaf, deaf & blind....
