Reference details for source Eyres.L & Eyres.R, 2015, ‘Vanuatu food and beverage production’, Food New Zealand, Vol. 15, No.6, pp. 18-19, Viewed 2 April 2017,

Describe the steps you took to locate the source The aim of this research was to obtain information on the production of food in Vanuatu and its people. To do so, the UTS Library database was utilised to obtain correct and valid information. It was decide to search for information in the form of articles as they are short, reliable and straight to the point compared to essays and reports which can be long and too detailed. Initially, I searched for key terms in the EWB webpage. This resulted in me using terms such as “Copra production or coconut farming and Vanuatu” as well as “copra farming and East Santo”. However, these searches resulted in information that was too specific and irrelevant to the research. Therefore, to obtain more relevant information on the production of food in Vanuatu, I decided to use a more broad search term, “Vanuatu food and beverage production”. This led to numerous articles related to the topic however most were for irrelevant studies such as the use of production wastes for biogas. Consequently after analysing numerous texts, I decided to select Lauren and Ruth Eyre’s journal article on the food and beverage production in Vanuatu. This article was not only relevant but it also provided a broader view of the production of food and beverages in Vanuatu and it’s importance for its community. It will essentially aid in our understanding of the importance of food production to the Vanuatu people and the impact that it has on their lives.

Task 2a(i) Summary of key points The article’s main significance is its demonstration of the importance of food production to Vanuatu and its community. The main island of Vanuatu has a population of around 250,000 individuals and unfortunately Vanuatu fell victim to Cyclone Pam in 2015 where much of it’s agriculture and farms were left in ruins. This means that over 250,000 individuals living Vanuatu must recover from their loss through means such as international trade to recover its economy. A primary source of income for the people of Vanuatu is crude coconut oil which is produced from Copra. ‘The product has found a growing acceptance in the hospitality industry, replacing imported vegetable oils’ [Eyres.L & Eyres.R, 2015 pp. 18]. This can be of advantage to the people of Vanuatu as the product can be exported and traded, leading to an improved economy. Along with coconut oil, Vanuatu also has a large beef company which can also provide valuable funding for the economy as well as minor markets in Prawns, Beer, Coffee and special Vanuatu Yoghurt and Ice Cream which can act as means of tourist attraction to the country thus aiding its economic recovery. Vanilla and other Spices also create income for the Vanuatu community as they produce good quality Vanilla, Ginger, Tumeric amd Hot Chile which are all grown and processed to the best organic practices thus preserving the organic characteristics of the product.

Evaluation of source The resource chosen is ideal for gaining an understanding of the general aspects of food production in Vanuatu along with it’s impact on the economy and hence well being of the Vanuatu peoples. It is also from a non-commercial, educational source (.edu) which makes it reliable and accurate. In terms of its currency, the text was constructed in 2015 which makes it recent and thus appropriate for the research. Whilst it may appear irrelevant to engineering it however deepens our understanding of the current situation in Vanuatu regarding food production. This enables for a more effective design solution to when solving the food production issues faced in Vanuatu. The purpose of the text is not to provide an in detailed description of food production in Vanuatu. Instead, it aims to provide a broader perspective of the situations faced in Vanuatu. It used numerous sources of evidence through reference to food production companies as well as information on the production and contents of some of the foods produced in Vanuatu.
