Machine Design 1 Problem Solving (1-9)...
ME 17 | MACHINE DESIGN 1 ACTIVITY
Instruction/s: This activity will practice your skills/speed/techniques in solving machine design problems. Solve as many problems as you can. Show your solutions.
1. A cylinder having an inside diameter of 15 in and wall thickness of 3 in is subjected to an internal pressure of 70 MPa and external pressure of 15 MPa. Compute the outer hoop stress.
2. A cylinder having an internal diameter of 20 in and external diameter of 28 in is subjected to an internal pressure of 8500 psi. If the hoop stress is 14000 psi, find the external pressure.
3. A round vertical steel tank has an inside diameter of 3.5 m and 7 m in height. It contains gasoline with density of 740 kg/m3. If the allowable tensile stress is 28 MPa, determine the minimum thickness required.
4. A cylindrical tank has a thickness of 55 mm. The internal diameter is 320 mm and has an internal pressure of 8300 kPa. Find the maximum tangential stress.
5. A cylindrical tank has an inside diameter of 6 in and is subjected to an internal pressure of 600 psi. If the maximum stress is 1300 psi, calculate the required
thickness.
6. A spherical tank has a diameter of 12 m, if the tangential stress of the tank is 18 MPa, determine the maximum internal pressure the tank can carry if the wall thickness is 25 cm.
7. A spherical tank is 15 mm thick and carries an internal pressure of 8 MPa. The joint efficiency is 90 percent and stress is limited to 48000 kPa. Calculate the
inner diameter of the tank.
8. The internal pressure of a 380 mm inside diameter cylindrical tank is 12 MPa and thickness is 28 mm. Compute the stress developed if joint efficiency is 85%.
9.Determine the bursting steam pressure of a steel shell with diameter of 18 in and made of ¾ in steel plate. The joint efficiency is 90% and the tensile strength is
65000 psi....
