Part 1: My Career Story My career story started at the age of 14, my family owned a Subway Franchise business for 3 years. This was my first ever experience of properly working and receiving pay, which was a great experience for me as a kid. The continues learning of new things, like dealing with customers, suppliers and employers was a huge learning curve for me. At the age of 18 my parents sold the subway business and got into another small business, which was another big jump for our family. Now we owned a convenience store in the countryside. It was a huge step for us as a family as everything changed for us. As the business grew, I slowly started move apart from the business and wanted to find my own way of finding a job and earn money my own way. At the age of 19 I found my first proper job at a restaurant called YO MY GOODNESS, and here I worked as an assistant chef mastering the culinary skills on cooking on hot grills. As of today, I still work here as I have made so many new friends and connections in the working industry. During my university breaks, I’d work other casual jobs like factory jobs, and till this day work as a casual construction labour worker. Analysing the results from myself assessment I was able to gather my strengths, weaknesses and my opportunities of where I need to improve more. There are three main stages were my scores were low; career possibilities, finding a job and finally interviews and offers. This was very surprising for me as, finding jobs, interviews and offers have been pretty good in the past few years of my life. One of the main career development theories that I find most valuable to me is Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs (Maslow, 1940). As well as Frank Parsons (1909), “Individuals have unique characteristics and personality traits and occupations and jobs also have unique characteristics”. During my career I have come to realise that the work I do has become more enjoyable and satisfied to be working with people who have unique and fun characteristics. The six drivers of change are about future work skills rather than focusing of future jobs. The focus shows, “proficiencies and abilities required across different jobs and work settings” (Anna Davies, 2011). One of the six drivers of change that interests me and see myself becoming part of in the future, is number 5; Superstructed Organisations. I see myself well connected to this especially in today’s generation where technology is becoming integrated into everything we do. The accessibility through these amazing technology helps us “amplify a new level of collective intelligence and tapping resources embedded in social connections with multitudes of others” (Anna Davies, 2011). It drives a new form of tools that help shape, social, economic and political stance. Today, as COVID-19 hits us technology is used for everything from, shopping, booking appointments, seeing doctors, family, friends and ordering food etc. “A new generation of organizational concepts and work skills is coming not from traditional management/organizational theories” (Anna Davies, 201), but from fields of neuroscience, psychology of happiness and advanced technology are becoming the new way of learning and living.
