Allie Gruner Professor Sanders MATH 1020Q 18 January 2018 Automathography Dear Professor Sanders, My majors are English and Human Rights, so I must admit that math has never been my strong suit! In high school I struggled my way through honors math courses, and I finished my senior year with calculus. As far as college courses go, I’ve taken both STATS 1010Q and MATH 1030Q to fulfill the CLAS Q course requirements. In the end, I was able to succeed in both, but I definitely enjoyed the thought process and hands-on approach to learning that MATH 1030Q promoted. I’m excited for this course because it sounds like it will do the same! A little about me: I’m a sophomore from Trumbull, Connecticut (about an hour and a half south of here). I come from a big UConn legacy - I’m the 9th person in my family to attend! I love reading and writing (hence the English major), cooking (and then eating what I cook), and spending time with my family. I also have a huge passion for decorating; my apartment is always decked out with every holiday decoration my roommate and I can find at the dollar store! I’m not exactly sure where I see myself in the future, but I hope to be involved with the nonprofit sector in some way. My absolute favorite teacher was my 9th grade English teacher, Mr. Smith. He was a sort of living legend at Trumbull High - he’d been teaching there for 30 years and he was a notoriously “crazy” genius. Mr. Smith was super eccentric in the best way; he refused to follow the curriculum, so he taught us the literature that he thought was truly important. All of his classes connected to a larger underlying lesson about life; he was really fixated on having us think about our lives and develop who we were, rather than giving us mindless work or encouraging us to focus on grades rather than learning. The best part about Mr. Smith, though, was how invested he was in his students’ lives; he would give anybody the greatest advice if they asked and treated every student like an adult and an equal. He’d write a letter to each student after each essay in which he explained their grade, praised their strengths, and highlighted their weaknesses. In truth, this class really helped me hone my writing skills and cultivated my love for reading, and I often cite Mr. Smith as one of the primary reasons I decided to pursue English in college. I look forward to this semester! Allie Gruner...
