PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE OF MANAGEMENT (MGT420)

NAME: MUHAMMAD KHAIRUL FADZRIN BIN MOHD HARIRI ID: 2019965107 GROUP: NBH1C TITLE: EXAMPLARY LEADER, ROLES AND SKILLS

For this assignment, I have chosen Malaysia’s 4th and 7th Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Bin Mohamed. He is the first prime minister not to represent the Barisan Nasional (BN) and also the first to serve from two different parties on non-consecutive terms (which are Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan). He previously served as prime minister from 1981 until his retirement in 2003 and now he is the chairman of the Pakatan Harapan coalition, as well as a member of the Parliament of Malaysia for the Langkawi constituency in the state of Kedah. Mahathir's political career has spanned more than 70 years since he first joined a newly formed United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) in 1946 and after that formed his own party, the Malaysian United Indigenous Party (PPBM), in 2016. As The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr. Mahathir is the head of government and the highest political office in Malaysia. The Prime Minister chairs the Cabinet of Malaysia, the de facto executive branch of government. Under the Constitution, the Prime Minister’s role includes advising the Yang Di Pertuan Agong on the appointment of 44 out of 70 Senators, the summoning and adjournment of sittings of the Dewan Rakyat, the appointment of judges of the superior courts (which are the High Courts, the Court of Appeal and the Federal Court), the appointment of the Attorney-General and the Auditor-General, the appointment of the chairmen and members of the Judicial and Legal Service Commission, Election Commission, Police Force Commission, Education Service Commission, National Finance Council and Armed Forces Council and the appointment of the Governors of Malacca, Penang, Sabah and Sarawak. Many of the functions above are said to be done by the Yang Di Pertuan Agong but actually, the Yang Di Pertuan Agong must follow the advice of the Prime Minister. Based on my observation through reading and discussion with family and friends, I strongly believed Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamed can be categorized in Decisional Role. During his tenure as Prime Minister of Malaysia from 1981 to 2003, he is responsible for all the decisions and policies of the Malaysia government and direction of Malaysia as a country. He is credited with leading the amazing growth of the Malaysian economy, and now become one of the largest and most powerful in South East Asia. The growth of the economy between 1988 and 1997 averaged over 10% and the living standards of Malaysia increased, with relative poverty is almost eliminated, such as literacy and infant mortality is almost par with the developed countries, to become the country’s social indicators. During the time, Tun Dr. Mahathir try to carry out a variety of huge construction projects such as North-South Highway. Since its completion in 1994, the expressway act as the main backbone route in Peninsular Malaysia which the transportation has been cut in half the time on the West Coast of Malaysia. Besides that, Tun Dr. Mahathir also embarked the project of Multimedia Super

Corridor which designed to enable Malaysia’s foray into information technology. The action taken by Tun Mahathir has opened more investment opportunity that attracts the domestic and foreign company to invest and also set up a platform for locals to learn more about the Information Technology industry. Since the establishment of Multimedia Super Corridor on 12 February 1996, Cyberjaya has now become a hub for innovative producers and users of multimedia technology that attracts both foreign and local talents. In my opinion, Tun Dr. Mahathir has great Human Skill. Tun Mahathir is known to be a capable listener and is always listening to what the people want. The Prime Minister knows exactly how to tailor his speeches and talks so that the people easily understand the message. During the 15th General Election campaigning season, he went around the country talking to the public. His style of delivery coupled with his unique sense of humor got many people to listen to what he had to say. He also spoke with conviction of how the new government would bring about a change in the country, which helped tip the election in Pakatan Harapan’s favor. According to The Star article on 17th March 2019, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad said the government's move to launch its third national car project was to enable Malaysians to learn and understand automotive engineering technology. In my opinion, Malaysia should now invest and enhance public transport instead of developing a third national car. One of the factually based hold by a developed country is to have good public transport services. I believe Malaysia do have the necessary resource in term of people, technology, and money to achieve a world-class standard in public transport services like Japan and China. By having good public transport services through Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak, we may attract more investment to rural areas and improve the Malaysia economy in general.
