Assignment #1 Fred and Wilma Flintstone would like to open a French restaurant in Bedrock, a city of about a million people. The Flintstone’s are trying to determine which type of location is best for their new restaurant. They are concerned on generating income quickly and desire for their restaurant to be distinctive to attract a steady clientele. With their two alternatives, the best one for them is the one on a charming farmhouse. Opening their new restaurant on the farmhouse has its advantages and disadvantages; however, this alternative is superior to the restaurant location being in Bedrock’s theater district. The Flintstones have only a modest amount of capital. If the Flintstones take the farmhouse location for their restaurant, they would only have to take out a one-year lease, for $600 per month, as opposed to having to pay a five-year lease at $1,200 per month. It is apparent that by opening their restaurant at the farmhouse, it would obviously be a fewer amount for them to pay and it would take them less time to pay the lease off. This would satisfy the Flintstone’s concern of opening a restaurant with only a modest amount of capital. The Flintstone’s profits would soar if they opened their new restaurant at the farmhouse since there is only one other restaurant nearby that serves Thai food. With the other alternative of opening the restaurant in the theater district, there are ten other restaurants already opened, with one that serves French food. This would completely create a great amount of competition for the Flintstones because they would have to compete with a restaurant that serves the same type of food as them. Also, because that French restaurant is already there, customers are already familiar with it and the restaurant already has a distinct clientele. It would perhaps be difficult for the Flintstone’s

2 restaurant to compete with a restaurant that is already established so close by. Consequently, opening their new restaurant in the farmhouse would allow them to gain profits faster since there are no other restaurants nearby with the same cuisine that they would like to serve. A problem that looks like may arise to some from the alternative of putting their new restaurant in the farmhouse is that during peak rush hours, it may be difficult for customers to commute there; however, peak rush hours are normally around 7am-9am in the mornings and 4pm-6pm in the afternoons. These hours are not prime lunch or dinner hours, so it would not really affect their new restaurant too much. In addition, parking is no problem at the farmhouse location for the new restaurant, while it is an issue at the theater district location. Because of this, customers would be able to drive their own cars to get to and from the restaurant, as opposed to having to rely on public transportation to get there. It would save customers time and unnecessary worrying of having to check the public transportation schedules constantly. Serving healthy foods to customers is an integral component in any type of restaurant. Opening a new restaurant at the farmhouse location would allow for the Flintstones to be able to have a large garden where they can grow their own herbs, vegetables, and flowers. The Flintstones will be able to claim that their food is largely organic since they can grow it themselves. Many people that like to stay in shape and only eat healthy foods will love the idea that the restaurant offers organic foods that is grown in a garden right outside. This would largely attract many customers. This would not be available if the Flintstones opened up their new restaurant in the theater district.

3 When one opens a new restaurant anywhere, there needs to be attention from either journalists or celebrities that would attract and influence customers to attend the newly opened food establishment. If the Flintstones open their new restaurant at the farmhouse, a local food critic who writes a weekly column in the newspaper will partner with them. This will allow for the Flintstone’s restaurant to gain major attention from the media. People will trust a local food critic’s opinion and will then be influenced to try the restaurant out for themselves. In contrast, with the theater district location, there will be nothing that will allow the new restaurant to gain attention and influence customers to check it out. Choosing a location site for a new restaurant is no easy task. One must consider the advantages and disadvantages of each alternative to decide which place seems best. Because the Flintstones desired to have a restaurant that would generate revenue rapidly and one that would be distinctive enough to attract a steady clientele, the farmhouse site is the perfect location for them to start up their new establishment for several reasons as mentioned....
