Assignment 1

Semester 1, 2015

Due: 4pm, 19 March

This is an individual written assignment. Each student will submit a draft outline for the individual written assignment (Assignment 2), a diarized plan describing the literature search and reading work both completed to-date and planned for the assignment, and an annotated bibliography of the three most relevant sources found to-date, explaining how those sources fit into the draft outline. Include the following elements in your outline assignment. 1. Draft outline for your Assignment 2 2. Plan of your literature search 3. Annotated bibliography of 3 key sources. Further description of these elements follows. 1. Draft outline of Assignment 2 Assignment 2 is the major individual written assignment worth 25%. The first section of your submission for Assignment 1 is a draft outline of your Assignment 2. The draft outline should include headings for the major sections you will use in your own essay for Assignment 2, and some dot points under each of those headings to indicate the content and sequence of concepts and arguments you will use. 2. Plan of your literature search The second section of your submission for Assignment 1 is a diarized plan showing the time you have spent searching the literature, and the time you plan to spend, as well as what you will do in searching the literature. That is, what methods you will use. There is no set format for this content, but it should be clearly laid out and emphasize the date/time aspects, as well as the methods of your literature searching, such as specific indexes or the library catalogue. 3. Annotated bibliography of 3 key sources The third section of your submission for Assignment 1 is an annotated bibliography of three key sources you believe you will use in your essay for Assignment 2. These do not include the textbook or the assigned readings you will find listed in the instructions for Assignment 2, your annotated bibliography must be of three further sources. You can find out about how to write an annotated bibliography at the following link. http://olinuris.library.cornell.edu/ref/research/skill28.htm 4. Reference list End with a reference list that includes all sources mentioned in your assignment, including the three sources for which you provide an annotated bibliography. Even though you have already given full references for these sources in your annotated bibliography section, it is important to provide a full reference list at the end of the assignment.

Word Limit The first two sections combined must not exceed 1000 words in total. That is, the draft outline and literature search plan sections together, excluding the annotated bibliography, should not total more than 1000 words. As annotated bibliographies will vary somewhat in length, no word-limit is specified for that section.

The reference list is not counted in the word limit. The word limit for the first two sections is absolute; there is no additional percentage margin. The WORD COUNT and LIMIT apply to all words in those two sections. All text in those two sections, including headings, sub-headings, quotations, and reference citations, will be included in the word limit. Words beyond the word limit will not be marked for those sections. Only words up to the word limit will be considered part of the assignment and will contribute to the mark for those sections. So check your word count carefully prior to the due date.

Penalty for late submission of assignment Late assignments will receive a deduction of 10% for every day late, or part thereof. For example, an assignment due Monday that is submitted on the following Wednesday, (two days late), and receives an initial mark of 65% would be marked down to 45%. No extension of the due date will be granted, except where special consideration is granted due to exceptional personal circumstances (e.g. illness, with accompanying medical certificate). The unit outline tells you how to apply for special consideration.

Manuscript and referencing style All assignments must be in Times or Times Roman 12-point font, with double line spacing. The double-line spacing is used to make room for markers to insert comments around your text. Make sure each page has a page number. Do not include appendices. All citations and the reference list must be formatted according to either Harvard style or APA style. You must be consistent, do not mix styles. Harvard and APA Style WARNING: You must follow the style as specified in the UWA library guides for the particular citation and reference style. These can be found at the following library web sites. http://www.is.uwa.edu.au/information-resources/guides NB: In other places you might find versions of Harvard style that have slight variations. For example, EndNote may produce Harvard references with the authors in all uppercase, and periods after the author initials - it depends on the settings in EndNote. This is not the style specified in the library guide and will not be acceptable. EndNote is a really good system for building up a database of references. The Endnote program links to Word and automatically creates a correctly formatted reference list as you insert reference citations while writing your assignment. Not everyone will want to invest the time in learning to use this system, but once you know how to use it you will find that it saves you time, and you should consider learning it if you intend to build up resource materials or plan to write about research in a particular area. The library staff have developed information resources, which provide the basics for using EndNote for an essay. http://libguides.library.uwa.edu.au/endnote...
