Assignment 1...

Description

1. Why did you choose this program of study? Marketing is what I chose as my major. It is progressive and will never become obsolete. In my opinion, choosing the right career path for the future is essential. Therefore, since the age of 14-15 I have started to find and discover myself in order to understand what I want to do and what career I should tighten my life with. Before telling my parents about my choice, I had considered all pros and cons of Marketing. In modern society, an important factor in choosing a profession is earnings. I believe that having a good enough level of income, I would be able to stand on my own feet, take care of myself and support my family. But the most crucial thing is whether I will enjoy doing the job, because if there is no satisfaction, then there is no motivation. Back home, I used to have a great time promoting school and city events. These activities helped me to determine that Marketing is my future. So, at this point, I am completely sure that I will love my job. 2. Describe what a potential employer will find interesting about your current or past education. To be honest, I have quite an ordinary education. I went to a specialized school in English in Ukraine, and currently I am studying at George Brown College. However, what my friends and other people always find interesting about my education, is that I learnt and am still learning 6 languages. I think that studying many languages gives a lot of benefits, especially for Marketing, where socializing and networking with foreigners, interacting with international audience and understanding their culture is essential. What is more, knowing multiple languages enhances vocabulary skills, helps to be more attentive to details, strengthens memory and develops many other skills, that employers may need. 3. Describe your accomplishments, awards, and any special recognition you have received. Being a student, I have always been versatile and very active. I took part in every school event and contest, as well as in rhythmic gymnastics, singing, dancing and piano competitions. However, the accomplishment that my parents were proud of most is when I got the gold medal in WICC (World Invention Creativity Contest) in Seoul, Korea. My team and I did a research project about the fastest way to extract a particular compound acetogenin from custard apples, and researched about its useful properties, especially against lice. Furthermore, the project we presented was “green”, so we were glad that organizers checked out our idea.

4. Name and describe how you have demonstrated 10 marketable skills related to your program of study. Provide examples for each skill to back it up. Don't forget to include both soft skills and hard/technical skills. 1) Communication skills. Listening is also one of the ways to be a successful communicator. At school I used to be our psychologist’s assistant, so I know how to be a good listener and to see the world through other people’s eyes. It is a necessary skill that will support effective relationships between employees and employers in the workplace, as well as with clients. 2) Analytics. The marketer should be able to analyze sales dynamics and manage sales forecasts and budget. Once again, I’ve been developing this skill since being at school. The simplest example is when I did researches and looked up for information on the Internet. As there is plenty of it, I had to filter and select relevant and correct information, work with sources and make conclusions, also called as information literacy.

Kaitlyn Nguyen (101203123), B158 1. Social networking. Social networking websites are becoming more active each year. Many marketing strategies include a large number of new platforms, which make it possible to create new trends. As I have a small blog on Instagram, and did some research on SMM and know how to always be in touch with followers. 2. Spreadsheet skills. Marketers plan, model, organize information all the time. So, they need the tools that will make it easier to keep and organize a lot of information. These are Excel, Word etc. 3. Visualization. Visually rich media is becoming more popular. If a marketer can create vibrant digital content, clients will not leave him unattended. As far as I am concerned, website traffic increases by 12% at least after the publication of a visual content. 4. Teamwork. As I used to do rhythmic gymnastics in groups, I know how important it is to work in teams, allocate time and resources properly. 57% of companies have a whole marketing group. But team building is necessary for every profession, not only marketing. 5. Creativeness. A marketer should be able to create and suggest new ideas and offer alternatives to solve one problem. 6. Video editing and production. Videos are definitely a compelling form of content that can bring many benefits to the company. They bring a

high level of engagement. My dad has a YouTube channel, so I am very interested in video editing. Moreover, it helps to develop creativity. 7. Public speaking and presentation. It helps marketing a lot, because before any presentation or speech, we have to research our audience first, use logic and make listeners be interested and engaged in the presentation. I participated in many contests where I have to present my research results and ideas to event organizers, so I have a little experience in how to organize the speech, data and make the audience want to listen. 8. Ability to learn. I consider myself to be a good learner, because I quite curious and want to be able to do and know everything. Studying multiple languages, I still want to learn more and more. Knowledge and passion are qualities developed throughout many years of making mistakes, hard work and personal growth. An ability and desire to learn is always highly appreciated by employers. 5. What are your expectations of the Work Experience Prep Class and your Work Term(s)? What do you hope to gain and learn? Having the course Work Experience Preparation, I hope to get to know more about the work environment, learn how to speak and communicate properly. Also, know more of how to write resumes and cover letters competently. As for the work terms, I would like to know how the workplace atmosphere feels like, to mentally prepare myself for the future. Also, a work term can be an opportunity to know more about companies in Toronto, and after some working experience, I may be able to know what working environment is comfortable, or maybe I would be able to find the right company and work there after college graduation....
