Assignment 2 – Credible sources Stephanie Phibbs Swinburne Online University

Why is it important to me as a tertiary learner to use credible sources in my academic research and writing? As a tertiary student, it is important to use credible sources in my academic writing and research because it ensures the sources I have used are current, ‘accurate and’ reliable. Reading broadly and thinking fundamentally about what I researched will allow me to produce an assignment that is coherent and well supported. The research and evaluation of sources will provide evidence to back up the information and ideas that is presented in my written assignment. The acknowledgment and demonstration of other people’s ideas will help enhance the work to an academic writing level (Swinburne online, 2017). This enables the reader to easily locate my sources of information and avoid plagiarism. Throughout my course, it is vital that I adhere to good academic practice which includes the correct citation, paraphrasing and referencing in my written assignment, and acknowledge all the sources I have used. Metzger (2007) has taught me the value of using critical thinking to identify accurate and inaccurate information on the internet. The criteria for researching and evaluating online sources, is crucial in determining that the source is credible and reliable. As I continue further through my studies, I will be able to understand my tasks and gain a greater understanding about academic integrity and writing with a knowledgeable and relevant way. I will enhance the provision of quality professional sources and proven academic researches.

Why is it, or will it be, important to me in my career to use credible sources to help shape professional practice? As an Early Childhood intervention educator, it will be vital to use credible sources in my professional practice because I will need to ensure that I am using reliable information to demonstrate quality teaching practices to build my professional learning. The Standards for teachers (VIT, 2015b, p. 1) states ‘’Understand the implications of and comply with relevant legislative, administrative and organisational and professional requirements, policies and processes’’. Giving children up to date information is vital for their learning and development. The purpose of using credible sources will assist in developing goals and implement a curriculum to teach, stimulate children's’ thinking and adhere to their individual needs. Children want to know that their educators care about their learning and want

them to achieve their academic goals to the best of their ability (Fisher & Frey, 2013). Individual employers will ought to depict premonition in exploring a quickly moving scene of organisational aspects and ability requirements. They will progressively be called upon to reassess the skills they require, and rapidly put together the proper resources to create and improve these. Employers within the future will have to be versatile learners (Future Work Skills 2020, 2011). Educator credibility is vital in providing accurate sources of information for the achievements of, children through their early year’s development. Their knowledge and understanding are dynamic factors for children’s learning. Choose a topic specifically related to your future career. Compare the relative merits of two sources about the same issue or topic that you have located, one with greater credibility than the other e.g. a journal article versus a social media post. In your comparison you are to briefly explain: 

why one source is more credible than the other

how this source would help you in your professional and career practice more than the less credible source.

The topic I have which is specifically related to my future career is ‘supporting additional needs students and children’. The two sources I have chosen to research are a journal article and a webpage about supporting children with additional needs. After reading the journal article and browsing the webpage on Wikipedia, I analysed the information and concluded that the article ‘Early childhood inclusion. YC Young Children’ is a more credible source. Based on the evaluation of Metzger’s criteria (Metzger, 2007), the article ticks all the five boxes. It is written by reliable authors and the information provided is accurate with cited references throughout the article and a reference list at the end. The (NAEYC 2009) states that they encourage holistic approaches in the three essential areas of inclusion. These include access, participation and support (Metzger’s criteria of accuracy). A brief outline of the authors’ names and qualifications are stated alongside their contact email addresses (Metzger’s criteria of authority). The article is a current source which was published on November 2016 and updated on the 28 th February 2017 (Metzger’s criteria of currency). The information in the article is factual and is written with a non-bias purpose (Metzger’s criteria of objectivity). The article is written in detail and the,

provision of other credible sources and scenarios are demonstrated for evident support. The use of references has been included (Metzger’s criteria of coverage). The webpage on Wikipedia is not accurate as it was not written by a reliable author and the information provided can be edited by anybody. The webpage hasn’t presented any details about the author (Name, contact details, qualifications) which deceases its authority. The webpage is current, it was published on the 20 th January 2004 and was updated on the 15 th July 2019. The webpage demonstrates some coverage as the topic is stated clearly in the first sentence of the website, ‘’ Special education (also known as special-needs education, aided education, exceptional education, special ed. or SPED) is the practice of educating students in a way that addresses their individual differences and needs’’ (Wikipedia, 2015, para. 1). In-text citations and references of the disability education acts are included, alongside some statistics which are presented based on global issues. The webpage seems to be factual and objective in a way with the least possible non-bias information. The article ‘Early childhood inclusion. YC Young Children’ would be beneficial in my future career, as it will develop my knowledge of inclusive education with such unique individuals. It will assist me in developing and providing strategies to facilitate the needs of each individual child that is in my care.
