Task You are to visit a construction site at least 5 times at equal intervals and select and observe a construction activity currently taking pl ace. Do NOT choose something trivial. The chosen activity should comprise a minimum of SEVEN sub-activities. Prepare a work study of the activity, and the rationale for using the particular method used to carry out the activity/ process. Based on your work study, suggest an alternative method with the aim of improving the productivity of the chosen activity/process or other following activities. Prepare details of the suggested method to improve the productivity of the activity/process according to the rationale (the disadvantages that you recognized for the existing process/activity). The report should be presented in four parts: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Work study for an existing activity The deficiencies in the way that the activity is currently carried out Description of the new activity. Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) of the new and existing activity

PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE IS NO NEED TO PHYSICALLY ENTER A CONSTRUCTION SITE. OBSERVATION FROM OUTSIDE IS OK. Scope For part 1 above, your report should include a written description, method study and work measurements of an existing activity/ process. In the method study make sure you include a flow chart of the activity (material, person or equipment type as appropriate). You are also required to critically examine the process. A layout of the current site should be prepared. As minimum requirements, the site layout should clearly display the boundaries of the construction site area, the access point(s), the location of the storage, waste and traffic areas including temporary roads, location of available materials on site and other important information. For part 2, you need to argue why you think this activity/ process is not carried out to its optimum productivity using text and diagrams as appropriate. In part 3 you should include textual and graphical material detailing the benefits based on the rationale of part 2 for the proposed improvement(s) including any modifications on the site layout. You will need to prepare a flow chart, site layout etc. of your proposal.

In part 4, you are required to complete a safe work method statement on the existing and on the proposed activity. You must identify all potential hazards and propose solutions to mitigate these risks. Your report should have the following sections: Table of contents, Scope, Objectives, Details of the three parts above as appropriate, Costs (where relevant), Benefits/ shortcomings, Recommendations, SWMS, References, Appendices (if applicable). Method You are to work in teams of five. Marking Assessment: The marking Scheme is as follows: Presentation: (3 marks)  Cover sheet  Diagram annotations, Quotes (where applicable)  Correct referencing  Introduction, body, and recommendations  Logical divisions of chapters or sections  Assertions backed up by quoted sources Content: (12 marks)  Deal correctly & fully with the topic without verbosity  Clarity in the overall aim of the answer  Clarity and sufficient amount of analysis  No large amount of material quoted. Group Marks For this assignment students will be assessed as a team, which means each group member will normally receive the same mark. If you have trouble with the operation of your group, ask your lecturer for advice (preferably ask as a group). If one group member feels that the other member is not contributing, the lecturer should be informed and a group meeting held to produce a solution. NO complaints about group operation will be considered after the assignment has been handed in....
