Description

PSY 324. Assignment 3. All questions pertain to the movie, Zootopia (20 points). Due Tuesday, April 24th. 1) Who has greater Emotional Intelligence, Judy or Nick? Explain. (2 pts.) I think that Judy has greater emotional intelligence than Nick. When Judy is ridiculed for her dream of being a bunny cop as a child, she used that to fuel her desire and did not let things affect her in a negative way. She had a healthy attitude and did a good job of regulating her life and emotions and did eventually fulfill her dream despite the ridicule and bullying. Nick, on the other hand, who was bullied for being a predator, allowed the bullying to affect his whole life. He told Judy that if foxes are viewed as sly and deceiving, he might as well live up to that. He also seems to emotionally shut down and become uncomfortable after having the conversation where he admitted he was bullied, whereas Judy is very open to sharing emotions.

2) Identify how Judy’s perception of a situation in the movie produced a negative emotion. Suggest an alternative interpretation of the event that could have produced a different emotion. (2 pts.) In the movie, Judy perceived the events that occurred in Zootopia after she found the 14 predators as her fault. She perceived that she “broke” Zootopia, and this made her sad. Another way she could have interpreted this could have been to view this is a stepping stone to more good changes coming to Zootopia, which probably would have made her happier.

3) Provide an example of positive emotion leading to risk-taking. (2 pts.). Judy was full of happiness and positive emotion when she first joined the police force. I believe this initial happiness is what led her to take the risk of betting her job on finding Mr. Otterton within 48 hours, she felt very happy and therefore optimistic about it.

4) Identify an emotional regulation strategy used in the movie that was effective. Explain. (2 pts.) Judy used an antecedent-focused strategy called cognitive changed, where she tried to turn the situation around in her head. Instead of focusing on all the negatives, she tried to look at her situation

in a different way. Instead of viewing herself as a small bunny that could never be a cop, she viewed it as a challenge. When she kept failing all her physical tests in the police academy, she just viewed that as an opportunity to work harder. And even when she was given the job of a meter maid, she viewed the 100-ticket a day minimum as a challenge to write 200 tickets to prove she was a good cop.

5) Identify an emotional regulation strategy used in the movie that was ineffective. Explain. (2 pts.) Nick uses the antecedent focused strategy of situational selection. He got teased for being a predator trying to be in the same group as prey animals, and was very upset. Rather than put himself through the emotional pain of trying to fit in or be kind, he decided to act like the stereotype that others assumed he would be like, so that he could not be bullied again. He was selecting his own situation in this case.

6) Explain Judy’s ability to become the first rabbit police officer using neurological structures. That is, what area of Judy’s brain that we’ve discussed in class would need to be highly developed for her to become a bunny cop? (2 pts.) Judy’s prefrontal cortex would have needed to be highly developed for her to become a bunny cop because it took a lot of planning and thinking ahead, which is what that part of the brain does. She would use her amygdala less and the prefrontal cortex more because she was thinking past the emotion of fear and planning ways to overcome that.

7) Does Judy have positive illusions? What are some benefits and detriments of this? (2 pts.) I do believe Judy has positive illusions, as well as a healthy dose of optimism. Judy’s positive illusions and optimism lead her to go to the police academy, which was a risk because she would be the first bunny cop ever in Zootopia, and she would be working among many animals larger and more respected than her. However, because she overestimated her skills, she believed that she had what it took and took the risk. The benefit of this was: she worked hard and fulfilled her dream of becoming a bunny cop. A detriment is that as a police officer, she was put in dangerous and life-threatening situations and overestimating your abilities could put you in dangerous positions that could lead to harm.

8) Describe Judy’s initial attitudes toward foxes in terms of prejudice, stereotypes, and discrimination. (3 pts.) Judy’s initial attitudes towards foxes were prejudice, because a gut reaction of hers was to be scared of foxes. As a young bunny, she was attacked by a fox who was also quite verbally abusive during the attack as well, so that is what her first exposure to foxes as predators was. She also had a stereotype of foxes as well-she made a speech during the movie talking about biology, specifically the biology of predators making them go savage. This is her stereotype that foxes like Nick are able to go savage. In terms of discrimination, she shows this by carrying around fox repellent.

9) Use Behaviors from Intergroup Affect and Stereotypes (BIAS) to explain the predators’ attitudes toward Judy. (2 pts.) This one was a little bit tougher for me-I perceived that Judy was met with contempt by people like Chief Bogo, even though she was a very warm individual. This would signify according to this chart that he viewed her as not warm and not competent. This also lead to passive harm from other animals-no one really wanted to help her or be nice to her.

10) Provide an example of sadness leading to more critical thinking. (1 pt.) An example of sadness leading to more critical thinking was when Judy went back to her parents farm to sell carrots. She was visibly very sad but then when Gideon the fox came around and mentioned

nighthowler flowers, and her parents mentioned that they made one of their relatives bite her mother, she pieced this information together to discover that nighthowler flowers were making the predators go savage....
