Assignment 5 (Stat 2020) Exercise 1 (36 marks) Naming the ink color of color words can be difficult. For example, if asked to name the colour of the word "blue" is difficult because the answer (red) conflicts with the word "blue." This interference is called "Stroop Interference" after the researcher who first discovered the phenomenon. This case study is a classroom demonstration. Students in an introductory statistics class were each given three tasks. In the "words" task, students read the names of 60 color words written in black ink; in the "color" task, students named the colors of 60 rectangles; in the "interference" task, students named the ink color of 60 conflicting color words. The times to read the stimuli were recorded. There were 31 female and 16 male students. Descriptions of Variables: Description

1 for female, 2 for male

Note: for this question, you should obtain the relevant mean’s and standard deviations from your calculator. Do not use excel. a) Test at = 0.01 if there is sufficient evidence to conclude that the average time to read 60 colour rectangles is at least 22 seconds. (6 marks) b) Is there a gender similarity between colour words? (use a 0.05 significance level) (7 marks) c) Conduct your test in part (b) using the appropriate confidence interval. (5 marks) d) Are conflicting colour name times for males higher than naming colour rectangle times for males? (Use a 0.01 significance level) (9 marks) e) Assuming equal variability, is the male colour rectangle times higher than that of the female’s by more than 3 seconds? (Use a 0.1 significance level) (9 marks)

Exercise 2 (9 marks) The article “Chronic Beryllium Disease and Sensitization at a Beryllium Processing Facility” (K. Rosenman, V. Hertzberg, et al., Environmental Health Perspectives, 2005) discusses the effects of exposure to beryllium in a cohort of workers. Workers were categorized by their duration of exposure (in years) and by their disease status (chronic beryllium disease, sensitization to beryllium, or no disease). The results were as follows: Duration of Exposure Disease Status...
