It is used to evaluate or confirm the presence of coronary artery disease, valve disease or disease of the aorta.
Indications -CAD -Measuring hemodynamics of the left and right side of the heart -Evaluation of ventricular function -Evaluation and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias -Evaluation and treatment of valvular heart disease -Heart failure with suspected CAD -Heart valve disease -Abnormal stress test result -Recurring chest pain -Angina
Outcomes/Evaluation -Shows where arteries are blocked -Angioplasty opens the blood flow -Eliminate the blockage in the coronary artery -Tests for heart disease -May cause congenital heart defects

CONSIDERATIONS
Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post) -Advise the patient not to eat or drink anything (according to hospital policy) before the procedure -Possible cessation of medications that thin the blood before the procedure -Check for informed consent -Assess vital signs, lab values and weight -Hold any drug interaction medications -Nurse will clean and shave the area will be working -A local anesthetic is usually given to numb the needle puncture site
Client Education -Inform the patient that they will likely be awake for the procedure but they will be given medications to help them relax -Teach the patient that recovery time for cardiac catheterization is fast and that there is a low risk of complications
Nursing Interventions -During the procedure ask the patient to take deep breaths, hold their breath, cough or place arms in various positions. This is to facilitate the procedure being preformed. -If the groin was used for access the patient will need to lie flat for several hours after the procedure to avoid serious bleeding -Monitor vital signs and assess the site -Elevate the HOB to 30 degrees -Ask patient about any allergies, especially iodine, latex, medicines
