Description of Procedure Providing oxygen to increase O2 perfusion and sustain life.
Indications O2 saturation below baseline (usually 95% >), burn/shock patients, MI, thrombocytopenia, types of anemia
Outcomes/Evaluation Patient's O2 saturation stays above 92%, ideally >95%; pt. reports ease of breathing; dyspnea is relieved; myocardial tissue and other organs stay perfused
Potential Complications Hypoxemia (tube kinks, gets disconnected, is not reconnected, is not turned on); skin breakdown/ulcer

Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post) Pre: assess patient; take vitals, reposition, clear airway if indicated Intra: monitor O2 sat, provide humidification, ensure tubing is connected, reassess as needed Post: titrate/ween off O2 therapy (do not stop abruptly)
Client Education Report signs/feelings of hypoxemia
Nursing Interventions Provide humidification, patient education, assess for skin breakdown where oxygen device is attached
