Mindy STUDENT NAME Arostegui, _____________________________________ MEDICATION Oxygen __________________________________________________________________________
REVIEW MODULE CHAPTER ___________
Gas CATEGORY CLASS Medical ______________________________________________________________________ PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action Oxygen allows for a decrease in blood flow resistance in the lung leading to decreased cardiovascular workload in an attempt to oxygenate the lungs
Therapeutic Use Low blood O2, CO2 toxicity, cluster headaches, COPD, CHF
Complications The most common side effects of O2 use are skin irritation at the site of the nasal cannula and sometimes drowsiness. Monitor patients for signs of oxygen toxicity; Coughing, increased shortness of breath
Medication Administration Oxygen should be administered at the lowest therapeutic dose. Nasal cannula, partial rebreather, non-rebreather, venturi mask
Contraindications/Precautions There are no absolute contradictions to oxygen adminitration.- Caution should be taken when administering oxygen to patients with COPD, high concentrations of Oxygen may suppress respiratory drive
Interactions Amiodarone - Bleomycin
Nursing Interventions Assess the patency of nares and provide humidity if necessary. Monitor the patient via pulseox for O2 saturation. monitor skin at site of cannula or contact points of mask for potential skin breakdown
Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness Ease in respiraory distress- Rise in O2 saturation
ACTIVE LEARNING TEMPLATES
