Atonement Notes Chapter 1 - 13-year-old Briony is preparing for her debut performance of the Trial of Arabella, a story about a young woman who overcomes various trials to elope with a penniless doctor. - Briony is described as an orderly, if a bit fastidious, girl with a gift for writing and a tendency to misuse lofty words. - 15-year-old Lola Quincey, stays with Briony to escape a feud between her separating parents - Lola is casted as Arabella and is disappointed by the reality in the first rehearsal, “understand the chasm that lay between an idea and its execution.” Chapter 2 - Cecilia Tallis is described through her daily routine, smoking, reading and lazing about in her untidy room. She likes to leave home but likes to imagine that she is prevented from leaving. She also wants to clear up the awkward feeling she feels towards her long-time friend Robbie. - Robbie has an ambition to study medicine Chapter 3 - Briony sees Robbie and Cecilia standing before the fountain and is unable to understand the adult scenario that has nothing to do with her - Sixty years in the future, she will describe this moment as a crucial realization in her life but that at 13 was too fixated on ‘self-mythologising’ to fully comprehend it. - After the interaction between Robbie and Cecilia, Briony vows not to reflectively judge her sister and decides to write about this encounter in the future. Chapter 4 - Cecilia tried to comfort Briony while fixing her vase but is bothered that Briony’s sadness seems to have ‘an element of autonomy’. Briony then cryptically says, “the whole thing’s…the wrong genre” and runs away, leaving Cecilia confused. - Paul talks about his work in the chocolate factory and the plans for Amo bar Chapter 5 - Lola comforts her brothers who are sad over their parent’s divorce which Lola reprimands him sharply. - Paul begins to get attracted to Lola Chapter 6 - Emily worries about Briony who she believes Lola is mistreating. Lola’s free spiritedness reminds Emily of her much-resented sister Hermione who is Lola’s mother.

Chapter 7 - In the Tallis family lake sits in an island temple. From afar it seems charming and serene, but it actually is in disrepair. - Briony hits the lakeside nettles in frustration as she pretends the nettles are her cousins and her past selves - Briony says she will wait until something happens to her that will “dispel her insignificance.” Chapter 8 - Robbie sits in the bath and watches the dusky sky from the small bungalow on the Tallis home...
