Description

Auxenochlorella protothecoides Growth in the presence of glucose Introduction. In recent times, biofuels have been researched and developed, in response to the harmful environmental impacts associated with the production and use of fossils fuels. A variety of biological feedstocks, such as vegetable oils, are being investigated to produce biofuels from their lipids (Scarsella et al. 2010). In particular, Scarsella et al. (2010) suggests that certain algal species are “among the most efficient producers of lipids on the planet”. In order to produce large quantities of biofuels from algae, algal growth must be maximised. Organic carbon compounds could increase algal biomass productivity (Van Waegenen et al. 2015). Organic carbon sourced from glucose has been shown to increase the growth of various species of green algae (Kamalanathan et al. 2018 & Mayo & Noike, 1994). Specifically, the growth of Auxenochlorella protothecoides increases as glucose concentration increases, as found by Krzeminska & Oleszek (2016).

Hypothesis. It can be hypothesised that Auxenochlorella protothecoides growing in the presence of glucose will have an increased growth rate, as glucose is a source of energy, increasing metabolic activity and subsequently growth. When compared to an environment without glucose a higher growth rate will be...
