Re Read ad the following passage and indicat indicate e the correct answer to each of the questions fro from m 31 to 35 35.. 1- There are many websites on the Internet which provide lists of the world’s best cities to visit, live or work in. These lists usually grade the cities in order, from ‘best’ to ‘worst’, and are based on facts and figures provided by local or national organisations. 2- The City Brands Index (CBI) also provides a list of best and worst cities. However, unlike other surveys, it is based on the idea that cities are similar to products in shops. It asks ordinary people in other countries to grade cities in the same way that they would grade a product, like a soft drink or a car. What is particularly different about the CBI is that the people who take part in the survey may not have ever

visited the cities. Instead, they are asked to say what they think the cities are like, basing their opinions on things like news stories, magazine articles or television programmes they have heard or seen. 3- Each year, about 10,000 people in 20 countries take part in the CBI survey, and they grade a total of 50 cities. They do this by filling in an online questionnaire (mau cau hoi truc tuyen) There are several categories in the survey. These include things like the economy, education, the environment, local culture, climate and what the city’s residents are like. 4- The CBI list is useful because it helps people choose a good place to live, find work or take a holiday. It also helps regional governments to understand why people and businesses are, or are not, coming to their cities, and so shows them areas which they could develop or improve. Re Read ad the following passage and indicat indicate e the correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42 42.. 1- A leech is a type of freshwater worm (sau nuoc ngot) that attaches itself to people and animals which enter rivers and ponds and takes blood (hut mau )from its hosts in order to survive. It has long been recognised that leeches can be useful in medicines. Meanwhile, they were an easy way of removing blood from the body through a procedure known as bloodletting (su trich mau), which has been widely believed throughout history to be effective in treating illnesses. 2- The earliest recorded use of leeches for this purpose dates back (bat nguon ) 3,500 years to paintings of medicinal leeches found in tombs in ancient Egypt, but the practice is probably much older. In the days before antibiotics (thuoc khang sinh) and sterile surgery, (phau thuat vo trung) bloodletting was one of the few tools available to combat infections (su truyen nhiem) and treat wounds, although in many cases, the treatment was ineffective and often even dangerous. The practice of bloodletting by leeches reached its peak (dat den thoi ky dinh cao) in the 1830s and leeches were used to treat a wide variety of disorders, ranging from headaches to yellow fever. Medical bloodletting was so popular that the commercial trade in leeches became a major industry in some countries. 3- By the early 20th century, hirudotherapy - the medical use of leeches - was considered old-fashioned and somewhat barbaric (man ro). This all changed in the 1980s thanks to Joseph Upton, a surgeon based at Harvard University in the USA. Upton wrote an article about his successful use of hirudotherapy to treat a condition where blood pools (tu mau) under the skin. Not only can leeches remove the excess blood quickly, but their saliva (nuoc bot) contains a natural anti-coagulant that prevents blood from clotting.(von cuc) 4- In fact, the saliva of leeches is a useful pharmaceutical substance in other respects too . It acts as a local anaesthetic (chat gay te) because it contains a chemical that numbs (lam te liet) its host so that the person doesn’t know that a leech has attached itself. Leech saliva also contains both a chemical that brings down (lam giam) swelling, and bacteria that produce a natural antibiotic substance to prevent their host picking up other infections. 5- Scientists have been trying to develop a mechanical leech that would avoid the risk of infection and be effective over longer periods. Hopefully, patients who are bothered by the thought of biological leeches might be better able to tolerate the mechanical kind. Question 36: Which best serves as the title for the passage? A.
