DISCUSSION WEEK 5

Discuss the following questions below: 

Suppose the president of your college or university decided to merge with or acquire another school. What schools would be good candidates for this horizontal integration move? Would the move be a success?

Horizontal integration refers to pursuing a diversification strategy by acquiring or merging with a rival. The term merger is generally used when two similarly sized firms are integrated into a single entity. In an acquisition, a larger firm purchases and absorbs a smaller firm.

I think if this happens the top schools would be the good candidates for this horizontal integration move. Specifically these schools are: Th The e Univ University ersity o off the Phili Philippin ppin ppines es (UP) is the country’s national university. This premier institution of higher learning was established in 1908 and is now a university system composed of eight constituent universities and one autonomous college spread throughout 17 campuses in the archipelago. It offers the most number of undergraduate and graduate degree programs and is composed of almost 50 percent of the entire UP System student population. The Aten Ateneo eo de Manil anilaa Univers University ity is a private research university which ranks 601-650 th in the world rankings and joint 124 in Asia. Its four campuses are located in the Metro Manila region, with the main campus in Quezon City. Founded in 1859 by the Society of Jesus, it’s one of the country’s oldest universities. Ateneo ranks as one of the top 200 universities in the world for English language and literature, and its arts and humanities faculty is ranked as one of the top 350 in the world. Next among the top universities in the Philippines, De La Sall Salle e Uni Universit versit versityy (D (DLSU) LSU) is th ranked 801-1000 in the world and 156 in the latest edition of the QS Asia University Rankings. DLSU is a private, Roman Catholic research university which was founded in 1911 by the Brothers of the Christian Schools and was originally a boys’ school. It teaches around 18,500 students and has a main campus in the heart of Manila. Like the Ateneo de Manila University

and the University of the Philippines, DLSU ranks within the top 200 universities in the world for English language and literature. The U nivers niversity ity of Santo Tom Tomaas (UST, also known as Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas, or the Catholic University of the Philippines) is ranked 801-1000 in the world rankings and 179th in Asia. UST is a private, Roman Catholic research university located in Manila, and has the distinction of being the oldest university in both the Philippines and Asia, having been established in 1611. It’s also one of the largest Catholic universities in the world, with over 42,000 students. UST has been rated four out of five stars in the QS Stars benchmarking system, and was recognized as having the most accredited programs in the country in 2013.

These schools are all well-known by the public because they delivered Excellency when it comes to different BAR and BOARD Examinations. And also they are known for producing students who are more competitively in the corporate world. Merging or acquiring these kind of school will greatly give benefits for the school in so many ways. Like what have said in the horizontal integration move there’s an advantage and disadvantage but still I can see the success in this kind of move. Simply because by acquiring this schools it also reduce the competition of schools because it became as one and the school itself will have an advantage with other school competitors. Second, it might increase the revenue and reduce the expenses because it became one the students will be more attracted to be enrolled in this school and the expense will be distributed. Lastly, Bigger Base of Customers because the two schools may be operating in the same industry which is both into educational or academic purpose for professionalism, they may not necessarily have the same enrollees base. By merging the two schools into one, the new organization now has access to a larger base of enrollees. The larger the base the more possibility for this horizontal integration move opportunity to be a success move that the school president will be deciding upon.
