A new student in your class has been living in foster care and tends to isolate herself from the other students. Based on what you know of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, you understand that the student will need to feel that she belongs in your class before she can attempt to learn the content you are teaching. Describe three strategies you could utilize to make this student feel like a valued member of your classroom community.
As the student’s teacher, the way I would utilize Maslow’s hierarchy of needs will be to ensure the student that she is welcomed and is a part of the class like every other student, this technique I will be applying Maslow’s safety and security needs. During my second strategy, I would try to get to know the student better by learning what she likes and dislikes, this it may help her to feel more comfortable, by doing this I am addressing the student’s love and belongingness needs. During the last strategy, I would call on the student often to involve her more in classroom participations and responsibilities, this method will build the student’s self-worth and self-esteems needs.
