BASIC EKG
Basic EKG Interpretation Nursing Care of the Adult with Complex Needs
Basic Cardiac Information o The heart has two components Electrical & Muscle o The electric impulse stimulates the muscle to contract – moves the blood along o The heart will beat until it cannot beat anymore o Any cell can stimulate the cardiac cycle: SA Node (Pacemaker of the heart)- 60-100 AV Node/Junction – 40-60 Ventricles – 20-40 Electrocardiogram o EKG lets you see the electricity that flows through the heart
Views of the Heart o Lead I – From R arm to L arm o Lead II – From R arm to L leg o Lead III – From L arm to L leg o Most commonly viewed lead is Lead II o Change lead to get different view, reduce artifact, better tracing, check asystole

BASIC EKG
Electrocardiogram Paper
Normal Sinus Rhythm Criteria o Rate – 60 to100bpm o Rhythm – regular o All components are present: P wave, QRS, T wave P wave before every QRS o All measurements are in the normal range: PR interval – 0.12 to 0.20 QRS – less than 0.12 QT Interval – 0.35 to 0.45 Sinus Rhythm Sinus rhythm with 1st degree AV Block
2
BASIC EKG
o All the components of Normal Sinus Rhythm except o PR interval is greater than 0.20 Sinus Tachycardia
o Rate – greater than 100bpm o Rhythm – regular o All components are present: P wave, QRS, T wave P wave before every QRS o All measurements are in the normal range: PR interval – 0.12 to 0.20 QRS – less than 0.12 QT Interval – 0.35 to 0.45
Sinus Bradycardia o Rate – less than 60 bpm o Rhythm – regular o All components are present: P wave, QRS, T wave P wave before every QRS o All measurements are in the normal range: PR interval – 0.12 to 0.20 QRS – less than 0.12 QT Interval – 0.35 to 0.45

BASIC EKG
12 Lead EKG o Gold standard to identify ischemia and /or a myocardial infarction o Looks at the heart from all 12 different electrical angles o Gives an EKG tracing from each section of the heart o Can identify what area of the heart the ischemia or myocardial infarction is occurring
