Description

Basil's studio and comparison with Andrea Sperelli In the passage "Basil's studio" there is not the presence of the main character of "The picture of Dorian Gray", while in "Il piacere" by Gabriele D'Annunzio there is the presence if the protagonist, Andrea Sperelli who is waitng for his beloved in his studio, organizing everything for a perfect date. - The main themes the passages are : the pleasure in waitng this girl in "Il piacere" and the fact that Basil and Lord Henry are speaking about the canvas that is in the center of Basil's studio. - The language used in both texts is the LANGUAGE OF SENSES because in the frst and in the second paragraph there will be a lot of adjectves to help us to imagine of being together with the characters in the same setng. In the passage writen by Wilde, in the frst lines, there is the descripton of Basil's studio in a sort of connecton between the outside part (the garden), and the inside part (the studio). In the frst line there is the descripton of the clime seen through the window: it's summer; in fact the odour of roses (symbol of youth) is everywhere. Going on there is the descripton of the inside part of the house as full of objects and furniture, with a sofa and some partcular curtains made of silk (line 9), painted with groups of animals, above all birds. These birds from line 10 will remind us a sort of exotic place, and so a connecton with the exotic painters from ookoo (line 11) will give a sort of exotic atmosphere. On line 15 there is the idea that this house is very far from London because all the noises typical of a metropolis are described as the noises of a distant organ. On line 16, Basil and Lord Henry are focusing on the canvas in the center of the studio. The artst is looking at the canvas as it was his creature because he gave himself in paintng it, in fact at line 24, Lord Henry says him that this one is the best work he has ever done. Now Lord Henry tries to suggest him to send this canvas to a museum or a gallero, so that it can be notce by everyone, but Basil doesn't want to give this canvas because it's his creature. Henry didn't agree. At the end Basil says that he won't send it anywhere (line 30) because he don't care about the possibility to have success....
