Bronchodilators, adrenergic

Indication/ Use Treatment of bronchospasms in asthma or COPD. Long term control agent in patients with chronic and persistent bronchospasm.

Adverse/ Side Effects Nervousness, restlessness, tremor, chest pain, palpitations, paradoxical bronchospasm

Nursing Considerations May cause drop in potatssium. Give oral administration with food, XL tablets swallowed whole. Shake inhaler well, wait one minute in between doses. Do not dilute the nebulizer solution, O2 6-10L/min. Treatments last five to twenty minutes.

2 Ciprofloxacin Cipro, Cirpo XR Anti-infectives; Fluoroquinolones

Indication/ Use Treatment of: UTIs, gonorrhea, gynecological infections, respiratory infections, skin infections, bone/joint infections, infections diarrhea, intraabd infections, febrile neutropenia, post-anthrax inhalation, treat/prevent plague

Adverse/ Side Effects CNS: raises intracranial pressure, seizures, suicidal thoughts.

Nursing Considerations Assess for infection. Monitor bowel function for signs of Cdiff. Assess peripheral neuropathy.

GI: hepatotoxicity, CDiff, nausea,

Assess for s/s of suicidal thoughts and behaviors.

Derm: StevenJohnsons

May cause rise in liver function values.

Misc: anaphylaxis, tendon rupture, dizziness, headache, insomnia

Obtain culture and sensitivity.

Maintenance treatment of asthma and prophylactic therapy. Decreases frequency and severity of asthma attacks.

Adverse/ Side Effects

Nursing Considerations

CNS: headache, dizziness

Monitor resp. status/lung sounds.

EENT: cataracts, dysphoria, glaucoma, hoarseness, oropharyngeal fungal infections, nasal stuffiness, rhinorrhea, sinusitis. Endo: adrenal suppression (long term therapy only), reduces bone mineral density, decreases growth in children, Cushing’s syndrome. GI: diarrhea MS: muscle pain Resp: bronchospasm, couch, UR tract infection, wheezing

Monitor for withdrawal symptoms during withdrawal from oral corticosteroids. May cause decreased bone mineral density during prolonged therapy. Monitor for s/s of hypersensitivity reactions (rash, pruiutes, swelling of face/neck, dyspnea) during therapy. Adrenal function testing required.

Life threatening: Hypersensitivity reactions including anaphlayxsis, laryngeal edema, bronchospasm, and urticaria. Churg-strauss syndrome.

CV: arrythmias, hypertension, QTc interval prolongation, tachycardia EENT: cataracts, dysphonia, glaucoma, oral candidiasis Endo: adrenal suppression, hyperglycemia. F/E: hypkalemia Resp: increased risk of pneumonia, paradoxical bronchospasms HYPERSENSITIVITY REACTIONS

Advise patient to take medication as prescribed and not to discontinue without consulting dr. Caution patient not to use to treat acute symptoms. Advise patient to stop using medication and notify health care professional s/s of hypersensitivity reactions occur. Avoid smoking, known allergies and respiratory irritants....
