Module-2: Solution Oriented Thinking Activity 3: Analyzing and Evaluating Solutions for Problems Problem 1: United Bank is concerned about the increasing media coverage of suspicions of corruption among its top management staff. The VP of finance was accused of embezzling ten million dollars, for which the maximum penalty is eight years in prison. The bank's attorneys advised management to offer him a plea bargain. He will admit to the crime, return the money plus compensation, and serve one year of community service. The VP of finance is reluctant to accept, pleading his innocence. If the VP of finance is found guilty of the charge and the judge gives him the maximum sentence, the VP of finance can be sentenced to a jail term of eight years. TRUE OR FALSE?

Problem 2: Should employees who have over five years of experience in the company be bound by law to give employers advance notice of 60 days upon resignation? Is saying “No, Labour laws such as this one that protects employers discourage employees, making them less efficient in the workplace” a strong or weak argument?

Problem 3: Information: At the Buckmann & Weiser auction house they sell many different kinds of items. They are famous for their knowledge of antiques from the 18th century and earlier, and last month they sold a small coffee table from the 17th century. The table was sold for 10.000 dollars, and Len Buckmann, who had estimated the table's value to be around 6,000 dollars, was very pleased. He said that it was one of his most profitable items this year, and that furniture predating the 18th century was rarely seen. Proposed conclusion: Len Buckmann has probably had a more profitable sale than the coffee table this year. Do you accept it or not?

Problem 4: Information: Michael is a dentist and he treats an average of ten patients a day. He is the most popular dentist in the city of Greenfield, perhaps because he is the dentist who has been around the longest. Last week he had 10 cancellations and was unable to fill up the schedule completely, but he doesn't mind the extra spare time. Next year he will retire and leave the practice to his son, who currently works in another city. Proposed conclusion: Michael lives in Greenfield. Do you accept it or not?

Solution: 1. True 2. Strong argument 3. Accept 4. Not accepting
