• Denver asks Paul D how long he was planning on staying ○ Shook everyone • Paul D: he believed it was risky "for a used-to-be-slave woman to love anything that much was dangerous, especially if it was her children she had settled on to love." about denver (pg. 45) • Sethe: "I'll protect her while I'm live and I'll protect her when I ain't" ○ Pg 45 ○ Reincarnation • "Tell her it’s not about choosing somebody over her—it’s making space for somebody along with her. " (pg. 45) • Carnival - $2 (pg. 46) • Sethe keeps concentrating on the shadows that hold hands page 47 • "…old roses were dying… the closer the roses got to death the louder their scent, and everybody who attended the carnival associated it with the stench of the rotten roses… made them a little dizzy and very thirsty but did nothing to extinguish the eagerness of the coloredpeople filing down the road." (pg. 47) • They were all breathless and excited to see white people loose: "doing magic, clowning, without heads or with 2 heads, twenty feet tall or two feet tall, weighing a ton, completely tattooed, eating glass, swallowing fire, spitting ribbons, twisted into knots…beating each other up" ○ "all of this was an advertisement… the fact that none of it was true…" • At first Sethe was full of thought while everyone else (paul D and Denver) were enjoying themselves

○ At the end she finally gave in and "returned the msiles she got." ○ "on the way home, although leading them now, the shadows of three people still held hands" (pg. 49)...
