1. “Tell me your diamonds” (69). Beloved asked Sethe to tell her about her diamonds, which were earrings that Sethe had been given by her old boss. It was a set of diamond earrings that Sethe had received as a wedding present. 2. “It broke him Sethe. . . . He had butter all over his face” (82). Paul D. explains that the reason Halle never showed was because he had witnessed Sethe being raped in the barn. 3. “He would keep the rest where it belonged: in that tobacco tin buried in his chest where a red heart used to be” (86). Sethe and Paul D. were having a talk about why Halle never showed up and how Paul D. had seen him but was unable to speak because of the iron bit. They both decide to stop the conversation before it got too far and they were unable to return. 4. “Those white things have taken all I had or dreamed, and broke my heartstrings too. There is no bad luck in the world but whitefolks” (105-106). Baby Suggs believed that whitefolks had taken everything in her life away. Sethe was determined to go to the Clearing to pay tribute to Halle and Baby Suggs. 5. “For two years she heard nothing at all and then she heard close thunder crawling up the stairs” (121). Baby Suggs and Sethe heard something and thought it was the dog or they boys but Denver comes and explains that “she was trying to get upstairs”, talking about Beloved....
