Bipolar disorder refers to a psychological illness that causes the affected individual have extreme shifts in mood. It is at times referred to as manic depression or bipolar disease ("What's Bipolar Disorder? How Do I Know If I Have It?", 2020). The most prominent symptoms of bipolar disorder are mania (an extremely elevated mood) and depression episodes. The depression episodes caused by bipolar disorder last for a duration of two weeks at a minimum while the manic episodes can last for at least several days. The prevalence of bipolar disorder is not rare since it is at approximately 4% in the United States ("What's Bipolar Disorder? How Do I Know If I Have It?", 2020). Persons suffering from bipolar disorder have a hard time carrying on with their lives since almost all aspects of their lives are affected, including the education, interpersonal relationships and their health, both physical and psychological. Additionally, their families are burdened financially since they have to cater for the treatment of the patients. Consequently, the society stigmatises individuals and the families of people living with bipolar disorder since they consider them to be a burden and a hazard to the community ("What's Bipolar Disorder? How Do I Know If I Have It?", 2020). Therefore, it is essential to comprehend the diagnostic aspects of bipolar disorder and understand nursing interventions that are applicable by individuals in an effect to help the individuals as well reverse the stigma associated with mental illness. Before any diagnosis or treatment is done, a nurse is required to first assess the patient for bipolar disorder. The assessment process involves taking the history of the patient by conversing with both the patient and close family members. The nurse is also required to observe several characteristics of the patient, most especially their mood, general appearance and their motor behavior, in addition to paying close attention to the content they spew during conversations (Bipolar Disorder: Nursing Care Management Study Guide. It is because bipolar patients are always in a euphoric and grandiostic mood, seem to be agigated if they are required to hold still for even a few minutes and have jumbled thoughts which are bound to manifest themselves in conversations. After the assessment comes the diagnosis. It has been found that it is easier to diagnose bipolar patients who are at the manic phase compared to the others (Bueber et al., 2020). It is mostly because they are prone to commit acts of violence against others, a factor that is greatly influenced by their paranoia and manic excitement. They are also injury-prone since they are hyperactive(Bueber et al., 2020) . Since most of bipolar patients are hyperactive, their sleeping patterns are affected and most of them suffer from sleep deprivation (Bueber et al., 2020). Consequently, the patient are easily diagnosed with disturbed sensory perception. Bipolar disorder patients are prone to psychotic tendencies and so, it is easier to diagnose them with disturbed thought processes (Bueber et al., 2020). Lastly, individual suffering from bipolar disorder hardly sit through a mealand as a result, they are diagnosed with imbalanced nutrition. Conclusively, nurses, family members and the society at large have a duty to aid individuals living with bipolar disorder. Luckily, there exist nursing interventions that can be easily implemented by everyone. First and foremeost, it is essential to provide a safe environment for them since they are hyperactive, making them prone to injuries (McCormick et al., 2020). Secondly, it is advisable to meet the psychological needs of the patients by ensuring that their environment is condusive for them to relax (Bipolar Disorder: Nursing Care Management Study Guide. Nurseslabs. (2020). Retrieved from https://nurseslabs.com/bipolardisorder/). Thirdly, it is essential to manage their treatments so that their serium lithium levels are at the required levels (Bipolar Disorder: Nursing Care Management Study Guide. Nurseslabs. (2020). communicate in short and clear sentences since bipolar patients do not comprehend long sentences (McCormick et al., 2020). That is considered to be therapeutic communication.
