Action/Purpose Action: Stimulates peristalsis, Alters fluid and electrolyte transport, producing fluid accumulation in the colon Purpose: Evacuation of the colon

Major Side Effects Side Effects: Abdominal cramps, nausea, diarrhea, rectal burning, hypokalemia, muscle weakness, protein-losing enteropathy, tetany

Nursing Interventions Pre Med Administration: Assess pt for abdominal distention, presence of bowel sounds, and usual pattern of bowel function Assess for abdominal pain, fever, nausea or vomiting. If the following are presents do not take Bisacodyl Do not confuse Dulcolax (bisacodyl) with Dulcolax (docusate sodium) Post Med Administration: Assess color, consistency and amount of stool produced. Advise pt to increased fluid intake to at least 1500-2000 mL/day during therapy to prevent dehydration.
