Black Feminist Thought “Black feminist thought encompasses theoretical interpretations of Black women’s reality by those who live it.” (Collins, 2000, 405) Black feminism is a theoretical interpretation of the reality and consciousness of and for black women. For example, the legacy of struggle; of selfconscious struggle. “Throughout the history of the United States, the interrelationship of white supremacy and male superiority, has characterized the Black woman’s reality as a situation of struggle. A struggle to survive in two contradictory worlds simultaneously, one white privileged, and oppressive, the other black exploited, and oppressed” (Cannon, 1986, 32) Certain common experiences of solely Black women predispose them to a distinct ‘group consciousness.’ “Definitions claiming that anyone can produce and develop Black feminist thought risk obscuring the special angle of vision that Black women bring to the knowledge production process,” (Collins, 2000, 410) Interrelatedness of race, gender, and class oppression “[Feminism is a] commitment to reorganizing U.S. society so that the self-development of people can take precedence over imperialism, economic expansion, and material desires.” (hooks, 1981, 195) Attempts to replace denigrated images of Black Women with self defined images. “It is axiomatic that if we do not define ourselves we will be defined by others for their use and to our detriment,” (Lorde, 1984, 44)...
