Description

Law itself is a complex thing

Block Boss

19, Henry Rivera is a tough kid, son of a mistress He loved being in that neighborhood, family. He got older and became important in the neighborhood. Everyone relied on him, to take care of things.

Everyone paid him respects and if you were new to the area, he would come up and introduce himself. He knows everybody in the block. You just knew to respect him from his aura, and from what you know about him, so you did.

The mayor of the block – the block boss No one wanted to be in his bad side

The block boss takes the law into their own hands

People’s desire for order is not being addressed by whatever legal authority is in charge

Learning that there are a lot of neighborhoods out there like this one, is interesting because my neighborhood is not like that.

Henry was the body guard of the block. He’d keep it safe from outsiders. Laura Hoffman tried to get some help from legal authorities to no avail, she’d show up to precincts, but they won’t help her out.

Higher ups (politicians, captains) care more about results and data rather than how you do things and how you should properly do your job. Paperwork is important because it is evidence to prosecute the bad guy.

I’m a big believer that you should do whatever makes you happy as long you are not harming anyone OR yourself. What the block boss is doing is making me conflicted because he’s doing something good for the community, but he is harming other people when he is not in the position to do so. The drug addicts can call the police on him for assault but then again from the block boss podcast, the police precinct is an R and R and that they don’t do anything. I wouldn’t feel comfortable living in that block because one wrong move by Henry he could attack me even if I wasn’t doing anything wrong. It’s a complicated situation where if one thing goes wrong, it could blossom into 100 different issues. The thing with being a vigilante is if you make one mistake, hit the wrong guy—your block can or will easily turn against you. They could say you are no longer trustworthy to keep our block safe.

-In the eyes of the law, Rivera is a criminal. In the eyes of the community, he’s a keeper of the peace. Laura Beth Neilsen explains that if Rivera has the backing of his community, there is a way in which it is legitimate. -“I’m sorry to say it like this,” Rivera responds, “but the gangster in me is coming out. It’s pussies like you, OK, that piss me off. Because when you stand around watching someone get hurt and don’t do shit about it? That’s a big fucking problem. And a lot of people do that.” -I don’t agree with this because I would stand up for somebody if they were getting hurt in front of me. I wouldn’t do the stupid thing and trade places with them, I will do what I can which is call for help, call 911 or something. --

There are poor communities in the United States that operate like this, that can’t rely on their police presence to be effective for their community....
