BME 402 Contemporary biotechnology
Fall 2020

Attendance: attendance is required and will be recorded Textbook: none required; if interested “Molecular biotechnology, Principles and Applications of Recombinant DNA, Glick & Pasternak, ASM Press, 4th edition, 2010” could be recommended Course Summary: This one-semester, two-section course, serves to introduce contemporary biotechnology to upper-level BME students. The objectives are to: 1) provide a strong understanding of the applications of biotechnology; 2) provide a strong framework for the design of biotechnology applications; and 3) familiarize students to the regulatory, intellectual property, ethical, legal and societal implications of biotechnology. A significant portion of the course includes technical communications. Evaluation: • 28% Quizzes • 39% Group project • 26% Homework • 4% Participation • 3% Portfolio There is no FINAL test given during finals week. There is extra-credit up to 2 points; 1 point for a report on a preapproved outside lecture (can be online) that covers one of the class topics (ex: protein production, Industry Workshop by the AEMB-SBU, diagnostic development...). Attend and write 200 words, include the title of the lecture, date, location, host department, and speaker information (full name and affiliation). Grading: All Engineering Students must complete an electronic portfolio for the course. The portfolio must be turned in by the last day of SBU classes. If the portfolio is not turned in, I will give you an Incomplete grade. Cut off for grading is as follows: 95 or above = A; 90-94.99 = A-; 85-89.99 = B+; 80-84.99 = B; 75-79.99 = B-; 7074.99 = C+; 65-69.99 = C; 60-64.99 = C-;...
